Found it closed early afternoon with no explanation; turned out a wake was on later which I duly crashed. Has had a bit of additional work done on it since my last visit nine years ago but is ostensibly the same as I recall; an island bar, sensible if bland modern decor. Four cask on; 2x Waddies (6X, Horizon) Wild Beer Bibble and Rudgate Ruby Mild (NBSS 2.5, a bit aspiratory). 30p pint discount for the CAMRAs. It’s fine and maybe I was unlucky with my pint, but it felt like a classic market town GBG pick to me. 6.5

Wadworth-owned street corner pub, hidden away from the immediate town centre down a side road. Appears to have had a fairly recent refurb, done fairly sympathetically. Left side of the pub is the Sky Sports section and well-populated by well-behaved locals waiting for the Chelsea match to start, the right is a bit plusher and is obviously intended for nosh (tapas-style food offered). Obligatory black and white pics of old Newbury hung on the walls. Five ales on, four from Waddies plus Portobello Amber; my Swordfish was very good. Friendly barmaid. WiFi connected but didn't stream. No sign of the previously mentioned pool table. In a large town lacking a quality stock of pubs, this one seems like a no-brainer. Rated 7

A one room, U shaped corner pub. Eight pumps but several were unused, I did have a nice Merrie City Crystal Gold to drink but couldnt find much else to special about this pub.

Old Boots left this review about The Lion

Large brick built corner pub with a new old-style interior and a splendid carved bar counter. Basically one big square room with a square servery off set into one corner leaving a corridor like seating area to the back and side. The main area in front of the counter has a pool table and various screens and machines, a fish tank lurks at one end. The plaster/tongue and groove walls are finished in cream with blue dado rails, the area behind the servery houses a collection of old whisky bottles. All the seating is either chairs by tables or bar stools seating a varied collection of middle aged men while the younger ones played pool. The two main faces of the counter have four handpumps on each serving Wadsworths beers in good condition at low to average prices for the area. The barmaid won my “cleavage of the month “ award very easily.
