This place has been closed and boarded up for a few months now. I fear it may not open as a pub again.

Both the restaurant and the bar have now re-opened with the bar having a more pub like feel to it. A pool table has been added along with a quiz/fruit machines and a juke box.It has been re-named Veranda Bar.

The Indian Restaurant idea didn't really work out and most of the revenues seemed to be coming from the bar. The owners have now decided to address this and I understand that the bar and the restaurant will be more independent of each other. The restaurant will be expanding into other cuisines as well as indian and the buffet will probably go. Currently closed and undergoing refurbishment and likely to re-open later this month under a new name. I'll let you know.

The old Verulam Arms pub has re-opened as the Tazeem Buffet Lounge although it is still referred to as the Verulam by many. Apart from the signage little has changed externally, it's still a bit tatty. Inside however it's had an extensive refurbishment, which thankfully includes the toilets. It's now much brighter and cleaner, although the decor is a bit bland. The right had side of the old pub is now a traditional Indian restaurant with an all-you-can-eat buffet option. The menu is extensive with some interesting chef's specials, takeaways are available in the evening and there is also a local home delivery service. Opening hours are 12 noon to 11:30pm (11pm on Sundays). There have been a couple of theme nights recently that included an Elvis impersonator and belly dancing, both of which seemed to be popular.

The left hand side, comprising about a third of the building, is given over to a drinkers bar and in the months since opening this has become quite popular. Many of the old Verulam's more mature customers/characters have returned and the atmosphere now is more laid back and welcoming than it perhaps previously was. The restaurant waiting staff double up behind the bar and are always happy to engage in a bit of banter with customers. A large TV sits in the bar showing live sports including Sky and ESPN games. You'll often find an intensive game of draughts or chess going on (the guv'nor is a budding Grandmaster so watch out for him!). The beer selection - around £3.20 a pint - is standard keg and unfortunately the Greene King IPA font remains unused. However at my urging they have got some bottled Abbot Ale in and there is a possibility of some Fullers ESB soon.

With so many pubs going down the full gastro route or turning into restaurants it's good to see one that has got the balance between restaurant and bar just about right.

This pub has been in decline for the last few years with little or no investment. It’s largely relied on just a few hardy regulars. Well it’s finally succumbed and has closed down. Seems there’s no chance of it re-opening as a pub as there are hand written notices in the windows announcing the arrival of an ‘Indian Buffet Lounge Bar Grill Restaurant’.
