Yes concur, well worth the walk up New Road and the Musley Hill from the town centre. This is a fine, well run pub which offered probably the best beer choice of the pubs taken in during the days crawl.
Although one internal smallish space the two distinct drinking areas create saloon/public bar-style options and the pool table at one end, dart board at the other and plazma screen showing Sky sports for the middle two seating sections all seems to work well and the pub is comfortable rather than cluttered.
The knowledgeable Landlord keeps three beers on the bar top hand pumps but as mentioned also has at least one barrel and often two going in the cellar. And invariably one of these is a dark beer. As well as the three beers mentioned below there was Caledonian Flying Scotsman available from the cellar, but this wasn’t obvious as the cellar beers are advertised at the back of the serving area. So if you do decide to take a walk up here for the ale it’s advisable to ask if anything else is on before ordering from the available hand pumps.
This is now deservedly a Good Beer Guide regular.

Glad to report that much has changed in the six years since Alan's visit.Greene King sold the premises to Admiral Taverns who allow the landlord a far better choice of ale than the indifferent GK IPA and Abbott.On our trip the three handpumps were serving a very good pint of Coyote from the Wolf Brewery,Woodforde's Wherry and St Austell Tribute.The friendly guv'nor also said that at times he would offer two additional ales from stillage in the cellar and quite rightly the pub features in the 2011 GBG A wide range of beers have been featured here.
The pub itself is small and traditional with a darts board to the right of the entrance and a flat screen Sky Sports tv in the left hand section.It doesn't take many customers in here to create a good atmosphere.The pub has benefitted from the demise of The Rising Sun which was a few doors down.
It is well worth making the steep climb up Musley Hill from the town centre to visit this pub and you will be rewarded by fine ale and a friendly welcome.

The Crooked Billet is to the north of the town and was fairly close to the Rising Sun.
This was a fairly decent pub inside and it is a Greene King tied house,there were two real ales on the bar i had a drink of Greene King IPA and this was a decent drink the other beer was Abbot.
