I must have been luckier than previous reviewers as I found a bustling Spoons with a bright and colourful interior and a good range of 5 guest ales alongside the trio of doom. Service was pretty good also - clearly the management has improved. Admittedly the general atmosphere was standard JDW but I would have been happy to stay for a couple.

By the time I got round to trying this Wetherspoons I was already feeling sorry for the residents of Britains first every Garden City, due to the very limited decent drinking opportunities in the town centre. And by the time I left I was virtually in despair for them.
This is a very poor ‘spoons. Firstly it’s a very boring furniture store conversion with virtually no architectural features of any merit, and although the walls have some very interesting black and white historical photos of the development of the Garden City, it’s not enough to lift the decore above snooze level.
Secondly, despite having a decent bank of eight real ale hand pumps, the available ale options for my visit were disappointing indeed. The trilogy of doom dominated taking up five of them with Abbott and Ruddles doubled up alongside the Doombar and with one unused this left two alternatives in the shape of Bath Ales Gem and Brightside Brewing Grafters Honest bitter. I went for the Gem on the grounds that it was the only one that wasn’t a brown bitter and it really wasn’t good and I should really have returned it. However, granted that my visit was at a not particularly busy early afternoon time, there was only one person actually serving behind the bar and they had quite a tenuous grip on who was next in the people waiting to be served, and I just couldn’t be bothered to try.

This is a converted furniture shop going back to Autumn 1996. It's a completely typical low ceilinged rather dark barn that was busy on my midday Friday visit. There are only eight pumps which on my visit had the two GK Beers, Adnam's Broadside and five festival beers. I went for the International English IPA (£2.10) brewed at Shepherd Neame which was in good nick. It appears in the 2015 GBG.

A bog standard shop conversion 'spoons with a predicatable clientele featuring all day drinkers and well oiled pensioners clutching the obligatory supermarket plastic bag, this is no place for a social climber. However it does feature in the 2012 GBG which might tell you a lot about the drinking options in downtown Letchworth Garden City. There are five handpumps dispensing, on my trip, Ruddles Bitter,GK Abbott,Banks and Taylors SOD,Veto Ale(specially brewed for JDW),and a well kept Oakham JHB (£2.30) which made the visit enjoyable.I had to laugh at the advertised "beer garden" comprising four wooden benches with views over the service road.
You know what you will get before entering most 'spoons, this one will not surprise you.

Pretty standard but quite large Wetherspoons with the typical plastic interior and usual run of ales (3 standard, 3 guests) and cheapo chav fuel. There is a beer “garden” to the rear but not exactly worthy of any attention other than for those who fancy a quick fag. Of more interest is the story behind the pub's name and the development of Garden Cities that can be found in the historical snippets on the walls along with the interesting photos of embryonic Letchworth straight off the builder's lorry. The town has been decribed by various luminaries as a town for a simple life so Wetherspoons was always going to be a success here but as far as the chain goes, this is one of the more ordinary branches.
