Clearly a former coaching inn of some age, I would say Mr Fastard observations of unloved and basic still count some five and a half years later. Two handpumps still in situ on the front bar with a very average St Austell tribute on one the other one not in use for my visit. The courtyard with undercover patio section beyond the toilets looks like it has been spruced up probably as a reaction to the Covid outside only period, but it was not enough for me to warm to this one.

Another nice-looking pub located down a one-way street just off Hitchin's Market Place. Well-described below, this had just St Austell's Tribute and Proper Job on two of its pumps (the Tribute far too cool). There's an interesting bit worked into an inglenook fireplace behind the bar and there's also limited seating up a corridor to the left just before the lavatories. A function room named after Humphrey Bogart is available for hire upstairs. Despite the misgivings, I entered into a very friendly conversation with the barmaid and regular, and this, in theory, what we're all after. I shan't be too cynical about the negatives and straight down the middle is the correct score in this context.

The George is a decent looking pub that is situated in the middle of Hitchin.
Once inside the bar faces in a small front area which had a few normal tables and chairs and one tall table and stools, the room is bare boarded, there is a separate room to the rear left side which is up two steps, this room is carpeted and has two leather settees and normal tables and chairs.
There were two real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Deuchars IPA,which was a decent drink, the other real ale was St Austell Tribute.
Background music was playing.
This was a decent enough pub to have a drink in.

Clearly an old building, but unloved and basic. You enter into an overlit tap room with no character,it looks more like a shop than a pub.The furniture here is worn and there is a tacky sweet dispenser. The regulars were using the full range of expletives but were not threatening ,more like village idiot types. The barmaid was wearing a parka ,and was bantering along.Behind the two sided bar, there is a more interesting area with a fine brick fireplace housing a log burner (not working hence the parka) and two sofas ,while a single table in an alcove also gave relief from the fruity language.
Along a corridor to the loos ,there is a rear snug with more low profile sofas, one wedged into an unused fireplace.
At the bar just two real ales on my trip Deuchars IPA and a decent St Austell Tribute, served in a Fosters glass as there was a shortage of glassware, despite only 3 paying customers. The food offering looked at the deep value end of the market with most mains £5-7,possibly for a good reason. The door to Bogarts ChillOut Lounge was closed on my visit.
Down at heel,it had a quirky charm but could be so much better with some TLC.
