Up the hill outside Boxmoor, this is quite a small pub and pretty basic,no sign of food. The side entrace is not used,so enter from the carpark into an area with a small banquette before the semi circular wood faced bar and tap room. There is another banquette opposite the bar,a rear section with more seating while an area to the back of the pub was unused and unlit.A gas fire warmed the inside.
There are 3 flatscreens for live footie which dominate the interior. The few regulars who probably keep this place going pertch on bar stools and are perfect blockers, some with fruity language.
There were 2 handpumps both clipped with Doom Bar but on ordering I was told there is no Doom Bar (very bad practice),and my credit card won't work here ,it's cash only.I surveyed the keg taps ,with just mainstream crap and so it was a Carlsberg (NBSS 0) at £4.10,and maybe it's that pricing which keeps the regulars regular.
Nothing much to see here, somewhat on it's heels and no reason to return.

It's a shame to see traditional pubs like this struggling, it was very quiet on the Friday lunchtime I visited. I suspect the location is an issue as it's in a largely residential area. Nice décor, looks to have had some money spent on the interior recently. Low-ceilinged single bar with a pool table and dartboard in a back room. Unobtrusive music plus TV's for sports. Pride and Tetley on hand pump at £2.90 a pint.
