ORIGINAL REVIEW Sept 2010

The Fishery has just had a very expensive refurb, and has now become a very smart, food orientated establishment. No sign of the previous Ember Inns incarnation but thankfully there has been no alteration to the attractive exterior, just a repaint. The bar has been moved to one side of the building ,leaving a large lounge area, well lit with picture windows that open and overlook the Grand Union Canal ,the trout streams and the common. There are sofas, upright armchairs,a variety of tables and everywhere is carpeted away from the bar .To the rear and at the front are dining areas, with fully layed out tables .The internal decoration is very high quality and has changed the vibe of the pub completely. There is a lunchtime snack menu, daily changing special main courses and a substantial a la carte menu .A lot of main dishes are north of £10,but the snack menu contains much around £6 and the jacket potato I had was very good indeed.Sadly the same cannot be said of the ale, four handpumps serving GK IPA,London Pride,Bombardier and Adnams Bitter nothing very exciting and my Adnams was not quite right. However boozing was saved by a weiss beir from the lager taps 5.2% but frighteningly £3.80 the pint.Good mix of clientele, some drinkers, young professionals, and yummy mummies but this is not really a place for a boating crew session, much more suitable for an upmarket meal.

UPDATE
The exterior is now looking worn ,but the multi level interior is still pleasing, with dining now concentrated on the lower conservatory area. There is a long outside covered decking running canalside.Ale selection better too with a choice of TT Landlord and St Austell Proper Job (NBSS 3) with another pump with a reversed clip.Still fine for a beer.

ORIGINAL REVIEW - September 2010.
Little to add to Mr Fastard's accurate review. This is clearly one of the better refurbs of a boozer into a welcoming establishment with much of the focus on eating. Lovely views, decent nosh and busy for a Monday lunchtime but let down by a dull, uninviting and unimaginative beer choice of Greene King IPA, Speckled, Bomber and Adnams. The Suffolk Blonde Lager made a viable, if pricy, alternative and is more wheat beer than lager.

UPDATE - January 2012

A recent visit found The Fishery little changed with the refurbished interior still in good shape featuring lots of old wooden beams, stone floors and exposed brick and the focus firmly on food.
Ales available were Young's Bitter, Brakespear's Oxford Gold and Wooden Hand Pirate's Gold which was in decent nick and drinkable.
It's very handily situated for the canal and always seems to have a beer or two on if not offering the most imaginative choices. On that basis I'll drop in again for a quick one but wouldn't head here for a session.

Decent Ember Inns bar, plenty of room and a good canalside location. Friendly staff, decent range of beers and close to Hemel Hempstead train station.

I do come to this pub every now and then, and it is one of my favorite ones in hemel, i find the staff polite and good value for food.
