An interesting one for the city centre. The exterior of the pub is Jacobean in look (it isn’t actually that old though) and the two-roomed interior is small but has a rather timeless quality with white walls and dark beams, which enhances the already pleasantly claustrophobic feel. Four ales on – Jennings Cumberland, Ringwood’s 49er and Old Thumper and finally Sharp's Doom Bar. My Old Thumper was good and was quaffed in a relaxed atmosphere in the carpeted front bar watching Andy Murray inevitably succumb to Wimbledon defeat. Theatre posters and a stuffed pike were the key décor features I noted. There was a fire though unsure if it gets used or not. Some seating out the front makes for a nice seat in the summer weather. As mentioned elsewhere this pub feels nicely unpretentious and quite ‘local’, not what you’d expect in such a prominent spot. This one’s worth a stop for when in Winchester.

Mock Jacobean white and wood pub sandwiched between two Georgian style big brothers on either side, with a patio. In the GBG 2010

The interior had two rooms. We sat in the front bar, and i didn't really see the other room, but the other worthy reviewrs did. The decor followed the same white and wood beams and panel, The seats were a bit shabby and the tables suffered from a little carving. There was no music or TV on at my visit, which was nice. The service was very very friendly, as were the few regulars, thet were as wrecked as The Hesperus, but remained really jolly and a good laugh.

Beer; tap stuff with Doombar and a quality Ringwood Old Thumper.

An experience, but one i wouldn't have wanted to miss and the beer was really decent

Pleasant tiny pub located just in the square next to the cathedral. Everything about this pub is tiny - the lounge bar, the rear snug, the bar counter, the gents - even the barmaid was tiny!
Nonetheless, it's a pleasant place which inevitably soon fills up. The front lounge is far more atmospheric that the slightly tired looking room at the rear. There's plenty of black beams not only on the ceiling, but the walls as well. Decent selection of basic "pub grub" at reasonabale prices.
Beers were Ringwood XX porter, Old Thumper, Flowers and Doom Bar. Also Stowford Press and Thatcher's Gold ciders which was a pleasant surprise in these parts.

Terrific listed building in the cathedral close. Although not a sparkling choice of beers, fairly mainstream casks and kegs, they're decently kept but a tad cold for my taste. Mixed generally friendly clientele enjoy the characterful but scruffy surroundings. There is a smallish front bar and a tiny back area with lots of wood panelling and exposed (very old) brickwork. Quite an eclectic range of furniture in the back room, which is just how it should be. The ladies is upstairs but the gents is at the back in a sort of lean-to affair.

Malden man left this review about The Eclipse

Old town pub with timber beamed ceilings and posts, old fireplaces, some exposed brickwork. The Tudor style black and white frontage is apparently much more recent.
Two small rooms, the bar is in the corner of the front, upholstered banquettes and settles here, old theatre flyers in frames and an enormous stuffed pike in a glass case (caught 1898 it says). The TV in the corner was showing motor sport but no one seemed to be watching. The rear room felt bleak and spartan to me and I'm not surprised nobody was sitting here, cut off from the bar and no windows. There is plenty of external seating to the frontage.
Beers were, on handpump, Ringwood Best Bitter & Old Thumper, Pride and Flowers Original.
