E TA left this review about The Eastfield Hotel

An architectural gem as described by Quinno, below, this back street corner Edwardian Grade II listed pub is welcoming, shabby and traditional, all in the same breath. Unusually, there is a sizeable garden though it was empty when we visited. The back bar was closed, the front bar is characterised by battered church pews with stained cushions, worn flooring and friendly banter. In short, a decent local with no pretensions to be anything else. There is a pool table in a side room, dartboard and TV screen (mute) to keep punters entertained. The jukebox was silent, probably a bonus. The pub provides a proper community focus and runs regular meat raffles, Sunday roasts and karaoke nights for those who enjoy such things. Two dry handpumps on the back bar and a single pump on the counter where we were served. The pump was clipped with both Hobgoblin and Sharps clips, and the barmaid insisted the correct one was Hobgoblin. It was, however, Sharps that came out. We didn't argue though as she was pleasant and the price would have been the same. The Sharps was in good condition. Worth including in a crawl, but its main value is as a local.

A fabulous tiled exterior (the long-defunct Portsmouth and Brighton United Breweries) that features in the GBG 2014, though the ominous ‘to let’ Enterprise board perhaps wasn’t the most uplifting sight. Two rooms (well I could see a rear lounge room from the bar but I saw no obvious way to access it). So I settled in the public bar, replete with vomit yellow walls and some nice picked glass above the bar. The building clearly needs some serious attention, the smell of damp and signs of disrepair were evident. TV showing Six Nation rugby to a small smattering of punters, (in stark contrast to the busy Artillery Arms that I’d just left 10 minutes prior) though the atmosphere was friendly enough. Darts, pool table and a chalk board listing meat raffle winners. Three ales on, Directors, Doom Bar and (thankfully) and Oakleaf Hole Hearted which was on excellent form. This place really needs to be preserved but it’ll take deep pockets and the shedding of Enterprise's dead hand to do it.

Closed, due to ill health of landlord

"The 48-year-old said: ‘I was truly gutted when I realised I wouldn’t be able to run it any more.

‘I’m in a state of bad health at the moment and I can’t carry on. I’m devastated."

Having seen the transformation of this beautiful public house, we are now regular visitors enjoying the lovely atmosphere. With the added bonus of a great Landlord and Landlady. Spoilt for choice of drink as the range is now quite vast! The gardens are Amazing, very pretty and child friendly. Also enjoying all the events being booked for us the customers. A really great pub that has a feeling of homeliness too, well done "Knocker" and your good wife Linnete, Amazing what you have achieved in such a short time!

OK, after it appeared on here I gave it a try at Sunday lunch time

2 bars, Public & Saloon, 4 bitters, London Pride, Old Speckled Hen, Old Growler [guest I think] & Winter Ale

The decor is standard dark red & cream, fittings seem to be original, quite comfy

No food that I could see

The effing & blinding from the Public Bar was audible in the Saloon, not one I would take my mum into or walk up Albert Road to visit again
