A rather splendid backstreet pub, nicely traditional with a two-bar layout. Strangely, darts and the pool table are in the back bar, which is more of a saloon. A couple of sports TVs had the sound at a sensibly low level, and there were pavement tables out the front and a garden at the back. The beers are mainly from the owning Triple fff brewery, with a couple of guests, and seem to be very well kept. Well worth seeking out. Historical note - the straight paths to the rear of the pub mark the course of the long-abandoned Portsmouth canal.

A wonderful old school boozer tucked away in the backstreets of Milton, there are two unspoilt traditional rooms, three handpumps to each bar all with different offerings, three from Triple fff, Altons Pride ,Moondance and the strangely named Apache Rose Peacock along with Listers Gold, London Pride and Ringwood Fortyniner. Really worth a look in this pub.

A superb Victorian back street boozer which has evolved over the years to meet its customers' changing needs. The main Public bar is a knock-through and has a pool table, TV screens and various trophies on display. The décor represents the changing fashions over the years. There is also a Saloon bar which has a very loud jukebox, gaming machines and more TV screens. It's very noisy in here – maybe to give that proper 'artillery' feel. Ales on were fff Moondance and Alton's Pride, plus Harvest Ale. Staff were very pleasant, and the clients were a mix of civilised locals and ale drinkers. Worth a shot if in range, and a good place to limber up for a crawl.

Classic backstreet boozer. Set over two rooms, a narrow crowded public bar (a real struggle to get through the door) and a quieter rear room. Pool and darts available. TV in each room, one showing the footy and another horse racing. Décor fairly bland. Almost exclusively male clientèle but a good, if robust, atmosphere prevailed. Five pumps with an impressive mix, Andwell Porter, Oakleaf Spiced (special offer, cheap at £2.50pp and went down well), Fuller’s Pride and Front Row and Bowmans Swift One. A small collection of pump clips above the rear bar indicate a commitment to getting in interesting stuff. The manual flush urinals (which appeared to be of the same ilk as those in the Phoenix) were an unusual point of interest. A good little boozer this, and worth the journey out of town to sample.

The Artillery Arms is a friendly two room back street pub in an inauspicious location around five minutes or so from Fratton Park. The public bar is a narrow room with the bar running half the length before it opens out slightly towards the far end. It has typical public bar décor with bare floorboards and fairly plain walls. There are a couple of small tables opposite the servery but most punters were sat on stools along the bar counter. At the far end of the room there is a pool table which seemed to be quite popular and I also spotted a slot machine and dartboard. A large TV screen on the back wall was showing Sky Sports as was a second screen behind the bar. The lounge bar is a smarter affair with standard table and chair seating and a few pictures on the walls including a large old map of the local area. There is a large cabinet full of books on one wall and I spotted at least one more TV screen.
There were five hand pumps in operation on my visit, dispensing Ringwood Fortyniner, Andwell IPA, Fullers London Pride, Gales Seafarers and Bowmans Swift One. I tried the Swift One (£3.00) and found it in near perfect condition, In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I had to order another which resulted in me missing the kick off (and first goal) of the evening match at Fratton Park. The staff, led by a pleasant ‘old school’ landlord, were very friendly and helpful and the locals were a chatty bunch who made me feel very welcome.
This felt like a real hidden gem, off most people’s radar but well appreciated by its regulars and those that make the effort to seek it out. I really enjoyed myself here and was quite tempted to watch the match on their big screen rather than stand in the cold stadium down the road. Definitely one to put down for a revisit.

Simple straightforward unpretentious boozer. Oddly shaped place but has a certain charm. Doesn't try to be what it can't. Beer's usually well kept and service friend enough to make one want to stay for another.
