A Hall and Woodhouse pub popular with the yachting fraternity. It currently has 6 ales on draft plus the complete range of Badger bottled beers. Home cooked food is available, but the kitchen closes early in the evenings. Wooden floors and oak beams abound, and there are open fireplaces: traditional features in a relatively new building which give it some atmosphere. The welcome was very friendly, and they even offer free fruit from the bar when it's in season. I had pints of Tawny, Tanglefoot and Badger Best, all in excellent condition. It's a bit of a trek from most of the boatyards, but the walk is worth it, and being close to the railway station as well, it's well worth breaking a journey to have a meal or a pint.

Just up-dating my review as I see Michael Wright has agreed with me on the state-of-play at the 'Jolly'. After I wrote to the brewery about the slow service and was told they didn't take into consideration the views expressed on web sites, they seem to have done nothing! In fact my friend the 'Cosham Connoisseur' walked out of the pub last Sunday as it was three deep at the bar and only had two person's serving. He ended up at the 'Navigator' over the marina which has plenty of parking but not the atmosphere of the 'Sailor' and that's the thing, as Michael's pictures testify nothing can take away the view. The Firsty Ferret is on and in great condition. Roll on Winter, when we can sit around the fire and moan about things in general in peace and quite.

First a Health & Safety warning, this pub is at the bottom of some very steep steps, lots of them, not just half a dozen, these run down from roadside parking [there is not any dedicated, or disabled car parking] and once at pub it's on lots of levels, steps abound, so if you are infirm, unable to navigate step, steep or not, or even have kids in buggies, this may not be a wise choice of venue, plus regarding kids, it is on waterside, you will need to take responsibility for their safety here

I am waiting for photos to clear Admin, but as you will see it is a lovely location overlooking the River Hamble, hence the parking & steps issues mentioned

Our visit was around noon, on sunny Wednesday mid August, we parked OK but I would hate to try on weekends or Bank Holidays, Barry T is probably right, use [free at time of writing] station car park & walk, if you do manage to park near pub there is not really room to do a even a zillion point turn, go to end of road and use the turning area there, it is not far, check your hill start skills first, or you will be in the river via boat slipway

The pub has a dining area, plus a fairly large bar area, plus outside seating, one lot of riverside [picturesque views as Barry says, see my photo]and one under trees on other side of building

You can arrive by boat if you have one, pub has it's own pontoon mooring, check tide times first, it is high & dry sometimes depending on tide

We only had sandwiches, I opted for cheese & pickle, with a pint of bitter shandy [driving]. The sarnie, which came with I assume frozen chips [pretentious "Fries" are served here], it was around £5.50, because i was not paying I cannot say on general beer prices, but as Barry has pointed out, prices are high, but from the area & what I saw, those who use it can afford it

Never really checked, but I doubt you will find Sky sports, plasma TV, pool, darts, billiards, crib club, karaoke, or lap dancers, you will find the Hamble River rowing club there though

To summarise, glad I went, nice view, nice food, perhaps would return if in area but not worth a special trip

Oh, and a bugger to find, not visible from car on road, first clue will be number of cars parked, see my photo

Nothing changes at the 'Jolly', people still go on about slow service, high prices, small portions etc. etc. but the view is still great and the staff are good. When the HB lager hit £4 a pint I switched to the seasonal ale at £3.50.The boys and I still keep coming back so they must be doing something right!

This is the 'flag ship'bozzer of Hall & Woodhouse which is apt as it sits on the Hamble (Yes Howard's way). For me it's best in the Winter when the crowds die down and you can get to the bar. Park in the Station and take a walk to save yourself the pain of finding a parking space. I always drink the HB Premium larger here but their real ales are first class. Not a 'locals' pub. The food is slightly expensive but I suppose you are paying for the great views of the marina. The lads and I like this place as it attracts some of the best looking women in the area and you can dream of what it would be like to have the money the 'yellow welly' crowd have.
