Large Wetherspoon's named after one of its famouse son's. One large space which sells a good selection of real ales. Popular with students.

Impressive Georgian building, housing - of course - a JDW. Despite the imposing exterior the interior is open-plan and a little more dull than anticipated, though there's some impressive moulded cornices. Has the usual Spoons lived-in feel and whiffs. Two huge banks of pumps but not a lot in terms of interesting guest ales (many standards were double-clipped), so I plumped for a Broadside that was in very good shape though the glass had seen better days. Partook the breakfast which came out missing an egg though to be fair the server spotted it straight away and spirited one out on a separate plate within 60 seconds. Decent enough Wetherspoons, would have given it a 7 had the ales been more diverse.

A fairly standard JDW in an imposing Georgian corner building, formerly commercial premises, with 24 pumps on display but only 6 ales and 1 cider on. I had a pint of Oakleaf Quercus Folion which was spoilt by being served much too cold. Free wifi is available, the staff are very young and inexperienced and most of the customers were students.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Isambard Kingdom Brunel (JD Wetherspoon)

Large 'spoons, housed in a substantial and imposing building. The lengthy bar is located up a short flight of steps, and has an impressive moulded ceiling. It is light and open, despite needing a number of supporting columns across the interior space. A total of 15 handpumps, with several duplicates and 3xDirectors plus two off. However, there is still a good selection of usual suspects plus other such as Cottage Brewing's Herald (very keenly priced at £1.79).

A fantastic corner stone build, with columned entrance, the former offices of the Portsmouth & Gosport Gas Company according to the plaque in the entrance. Also, like most Spoons, has a patio.

The interior is a long room in red and pink (half and half walls) with the moulded ceiling in cream and beige, along with colums and capitals. It is, like all Spoons, foody in its set up, with a raised family area at the back. It has the usual silent Sky TVs, but has a little book area as well. There is a huge long bar and the walls are dotted with prints of Brunel, Nelson and the local area. On the visits i have made here (purely for pre and post sailing trips to the Isle of Wight, with the family) i have found the service fine and the clientele the usual mix, though with a leaning towards the student. The food, well it was OK as usual, as we stick to the basic things.

Beer; tap stuff, with the usual Abbots and Ruddles, but feeling homesick, i had an OK pint of Marston's Old Empire.

Its a Spoons, so its functional as far as i am concerned. Saying that, i have used this place a few times as i can cope with it more than many a Spoons i have visited.
