Previously The White Swan, and previously a JDW, now Portsmouth's only brewpub, you smell the brewing process as soon as you enter so it's immediately a pleasant experience. They use their own branded glasses and there is free wifi. There were 2 ales on, I had a pint of Little Brickie which was really rather good. I found the staff inefficient, possibly because they are too few and overworked. Well worth including in a crawl and good for novelty value as well as decent beer.

Malden man left this review about The White Swan (Lloyds No. 1)

Probably the most unlike the JDW/Lloyds brand of this chain I have been in, it just feels like a standard street corner town pub, which of course it always was and is. The building dates from 1916 but replaced a previous White Swan on the same site. The name originates from the local area, once known as the swan fields when the vicinity was dotted with ponds before being built over.
Fully carpeted apart from the tiled splash area around the bar, central island bar, lots of wood panelling and mostly standard style seating with banquettes and benches around the edges.
It was day 1 of the Wetherspoon's Festival and I had the Phoenix White Monk, which was superb, but although clipped as a festival beer does not feature in the programme list. I'm not unduly concerned, a good beer for £1.99!
Rather worryingly though, I did pick up on a discussion between a couple of regulars talking about the possibility of the pub closing soon. There is another JDW a few doors along. I hope not, to me there were enough in of a late Weds afternoon to consider the place to be viable.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The White Swan (JD Wetherspoon)

Despite being one of the most pub-like 'spoons I've seen, it is strangely branded as a Lloyds No. 1 bar. The brewer's Tudor exterior houses a fine interior with traditional seating areas arranged around an island bar. Only six handpumps available, but the Bath Ales Rare Hare (£1.79) was a welcome addition to the usual suspects.

Soup Dragon left this review about The White Swan (JD Wetherspoon)

A 20th century mock Tudor white and beam corner pub, with elaborate carved entrances and now a Spoons.

The interior is open plan around a central bar, with the decor mainly being half wood panel and half blue, though there is some red and other colours. The usual silent TVs decorate, side by side with the historic information panels, ornate mirrors and old photographs. Hitting the place at the right time, after the IOW ferry, we managed to get served quickly and there wasn't that much in the way of clientele. The service itself was fine and the food was fine to, i even ventured a steal & kidney pud in true Rumploe of the Bailey style.

Beer; tap stuff, with the usual Abbots and Ruddles, as well as Hawiian Porter, which was fine as well.

Often critical of the service and beer, i can't here, everything being fine. Will stop here next year! well done.

Update September 2009 _ Now a Weatherspoon's, but a bit out of the normal Weatersppon's range, not dark & cavernous, but comfortable and quiet.

I have always avoided Weatherspoon's because I dislike dark, cavernous, crowded pubs, but this one is out of the normal range, more like a proper pub, which of course it was & is

One bar, loads of comfy seating, leather chairs, carpets, bit dark as per Weatherspoon's format, but not gloomy

Went in Saturday lunchtime, service was initially appalling, despite being the only customer waiting the two bar staff ignored me.

I assume even they were eventually embarrassed by this, and deigned to ask if I wanted anything, I ordered a Pompey Royal as a tribute back to history, it was not as I remembered, but still tasty, I was gobsmacked at only £1.85 per pint, shows I have never used them

Found a table, which was uncleared from previous occupants, had cups, glasses and wet beer rings etc left.

Moved this out of way and studied menu, one more surprise at low cost of food, ordered ham, eggs & chips for £2.99

This proved to be very good value, on par, in fact beats, The Churchillian one I had at £7.50 on Monday, and the chips were hotter

Now, how do I rate it, well done Weatherspoon's for resurrecting this failed pub, even though there are at least 2 more Weatherspoon's in walking distance. I think this may just appeal to those, like me, who hate the large, gloomy format

Verdict is, I will go back, 3 stars, well 2.5 really due to service, but not a 2 star

March 2009 - closed, but has licensing application in window on behalf of Weatherspoon's, so assumption is it will reopen as some sort of Weatherspoon's
