An Edwardian back street local built by Brickwoods, a fine example of this type of architecture, at least externally. Inside, it has been partly renovated, though unlike many other similar pubs it has retained two separate bars, and the original fireplaces are still in place. There is no garden as such, ut there is a smoking patio at the back. On entering the Lounge Bar, we were greeted warmly by an enthusiastic black labrador, while the staff and customers were nearly as welcoming, but with less saliva. There is a dartboard, pool table and TV screens. The only pump offering real ale was clipped Doombar, but this had run out and no bottled alternatives were available. it’s a pity – this could be a very pleasant local, but with no ale it’s a non-starter for me.

Big. High ceilings. Long bar. Reminiscent of a London pub but without the atmosphere or style. In fact, a typical old Pompey pub.
