Popped in before Warriorfest last night. Really excellent proper pub. Staff were really really friendly and keen to chat about drinks. 3 Ales, London Pride, Ghost Ship and Sharps Atlantic - really good tasting and good price - £3.30. Comfortably the best pub in The Hard area.

The Invincible is an attractive Craft House & Wine bar with and amazing range of world beers unrivalled in Portsmouth, and an exotic meat and game kitchen. Found this a gem of a place and it's really taken off the ground! Top notch service even during the busy times of The America's cup

A naval themed pub consisting of a single large bar loosely divided into public and saloon areas. It feels much larger inside than it looks, possibly becase the exterior is a bit tatty. Some of the original architectural features are on view and there are lots of nauticalia cluttering the walls. There was a group of semi-intoxicated sailors loitering around in a harmless way, being looked after by a gloriously grumpy barman. Lots of 'fun' to be had: football evenings, gaming machines and a pile of coins glued ot the bar to annoy, confuse and identify the larcenous. There were 2 ales on, Doombar and Wickwar's Bob, neither of which was particularly well kept. It's ok for a laugh (or, as the Navy would say, 'Ss and Gs') but the beer quality could be better

Went in for first visit since reopened under new management. Lunchtime on a sunny Wednesday. Pleased to report the Naval heritage & interior is the same, ships' crests, cap tallies, dart trophies etc still abound

The pub is still a bit "work in progress" by new owners, the fruit machine was being delivered when I arrived, the menus are computer printouts [told the Proper jobs arrive next week]

Local real ale has vanished [was Goddard's from IOW], just two hand pulls, Doombar & Flower's Original, I opted for Doom at £2.60, a nice change for me as only yesterday my normal HSB in Cowplain has gone up 15p to £3.15. My pint was fine, but I thought just a tad flat, but not enough to complain about. As Doom is not my normal pint it may have been just me

Serves food, but it is not gastro by any means, most are under a fiver, and I think the home cooked meals have gone for the moment, so if you reckon reheated frozen ingredients are OK for under a fiver, like pie, chips, peas @ £3.99, I had this, it was fine, fish & chips £4.99

You may get freshly prepared if you have a sandwich, such as cheese & pickle for £1.99, or the all day breakfast at £4.99 which includes cup of tea / coffee, never saw one but from the menu it looked very good value

Generally I have no complaints, service was polite, prompt & friendly. There were over half a dozen in, with 3 of us eating, nice to see & I reckon the place has a future once they settle down

Opening hours are 10am to 11pm currently, but may of course change

I will go back, no reason not to, but sadly only 7 due to very understandable limited beer & food options at the moment

I wish them well

Reported closed, future uncertain which is a shame as it was a nice little old fashioned pub

Have to agree with Kate, nice clean pub, home style food, wide selection of beers, polite service

As it is near Dockyard gates the Naval connection is obvious from pictures & cap tallies on the walls, for any ex matelots pining for the mess deck, they even have "cheesy, eggy hammy" on the menu

A good cut above the other pubs in area and worth a visit

Update 9/5/09 - Went back again for lunch this time, good honest food at good honest prices, if you are in the area avoid the tourist ones on The Hard and go round the corner, good choice of draught beers & home cooked grub, you know it makes sense

Vegetarians may have problems with menu however

Upgraded to 4 stars from 3
