I managed to visit just before this pub closed. Previously The Compass Rose, and shut down several times by the police due to trouble, I was a bit hesitant to come here but it proved rather unadventurous in the event. A modern estate pub next to Morrison’s, there isn’t much they could do about the outside except tidy it up and build a modern paved patio with large grasses to give it nothing like a Meditteranean feel, while inside they’ve tried to make it feel like a sophisticated lounge. It’s all fakery, though, and things like spelling mistakes on their website show that the newly-acquired respectability is just skin deep. The staff are pleasant, though they got a bit flustered when we tried to pay with cash, but we managed in the end. Food is standard carvery/steakhouse fare, not brilliant and not good enough to support the wine prices, but it fills a void if passing. There was a TV screen showing the news but not much else by way of electronic entertainment, which was a good thing. Ales on were Fullers Gales HSB and Pride, both in drinkable condition. A troubled pub, but let's hope it reopens soon.

Update, not looking good

"The company in charge of a pub that lost its alcohol licence following a violent fight at an 18th birthday party is to be kicked out.

Enterprise Inns, owner of the Compass Rose in Anchorage Park, Portsmouth, has been given permission to get rid of its tenant Campbell Public Houses Limited."

A PUB has been banned from selling alcohol after a huge fight broke out at the end of an 18th birthday party.

Around 40 people were involved in the brawl outside the Compass Rose pub in Anchorage Park that left one man needing surgery on his hand.

Councillors will hold a full review of the licence on May 7

Pub is still open

even though a bit of a trip to get to from the city centre, this place is great to chill out in with the kids and friends. not over the top like some places during the day and the staff are great.

A very busy and seemingly family friendly pub, located close to Morrison's and there is a massive, shared, car park.

I was there just after 10 AM, and there were people inside, not boozing but it looked like having coffee. If it had not been so early I would have sampled it

Kiddies play area [fenced], serves food, outside seating

Would seem ideal spot to have a pint whilst other half does the wandering around Morrison's deciding what to buy :-)
