As described below by Steve C, this (1930s?) large pub is pleasant, welcoming (to a point) and better value than the nearby marina bar. The one thing that spoiled it for us on this occasion was the poor attitude of the young barman who started hassling us to finish our drinks at around 2230 (closing time was 2300) then got quite rude at closing time even though we were already starting to leave. Ales on were Razorback, Mayflower (a Ringwood special), Summer Luvvin from Piddle, all in good condition, and there was Orchard Pig on draught as well. I’d be very happy to come back for a few pints next time I’m here, and by then hopefully there will have been some customer service training.

The Mayflower is a large food led pub that is between a five and ten minute walk from the town centre. The L shaped bar supports three hand pumps that were drawing Otter Beer, Mayflower Ale and Bath Ales Gem. A premium keg range was also available during my recent Tuesday evening visit. Plenty of seating is available and the tables in the rear section of the pub were set for dining. I didn’t see a menu as my visit was fairly late in the evening. I spotted a plasma screen that was switched off in favour of some background music. Out the back is a large decked area with seating that leads down to a very large picnic table lined lawn. Parking is available outside the front and to the right of the pub. There was only a handful of people in so there was little atmosphere, but I found the staff to be very friendly. This is a place I would consider returning to for a bite to eat, but I wouldn’t visit with the intention of just drinking.
