The Carrion Crow is a single room pub with a couple of supporting columns that break up the interior a little. The bar counter runs from the front of the left wall to midway where there’s a small lounge like seating area at the rear. A stocked bookshelf adds that homely feel. In the right hand side are a pool table and two dartboards and little pockets of seating are found throughout this busy pub. The aforementioned columns have beer shelves and stools around them to maximise seating space. There are televisions for watching live sport, Europa League was on during my recent Thursday visit. The bar supports standard keg alongside San Miguel and I counted six handpumps. Three were unused which left Ringwood’s Boondoggle, Bank’s Sunbeam and Pedigree as the cask options. Numerous old pump clips up on the ceiling beams suggest a changing cask range. I liked it in here and thought it was the best pub that I visited this side of town.

I had made a long dreary 15 minute slog, all uphill, from Oldham Mumps tram stop through a fairly desolate, ex industrial landscape to get here. So my humour wasn't improved by the sight of 2 nicotine bouncers standing in the hallway blocking the entrance to the pub. There's a large (concrete) beer garden and smokers area at the back! Mind you when the barmaid went out for a fag, she went and stood in the doorway as well.

Once I got inside it's all one room with 2 distinct areas. To the left is the bar and to the right a lounge style area with decent seating around the outside, but with a pool table in the middle. There's also a dartboard to the side of the pool table. There were 2 TVs showing the cricket and a Quiz machine. A few punters sat on the barstools at the bar and a group of 4 sat down in the other room on my Friday afternoon visit. 4 handpumps on the bar serving beers from the Marston's extended stable. Jennings Lakeland Stunner, Wychwood Black Wych, Brakspear Oxford Gold and Marston's Charge. My pint of Jennings was in good nick as well.

It's a decent pub and I'm told that the handpumps will increase to 6 soon, but it's still a Marston's tied house. It's fully worthy of its CAMRA GBG2014 entry, but it's not the best pub in Oldham, never mind the Rochdale, Oldham & Bury area as has been voted by the local branch.

It's worth a visit, but then walk back down the hill to visit The Ashton Arms. The real best pub in Oldham in my opinion.
