Another pub I made a return visit to and found this one roughly the same as my remembrances in layout but looking a bit smarter and has obviously been spruced up over the intervening years. Perhaps last year when Old Boots tried to visit. But what has changed is that it is now a Butcombe owned pub and the block of five hand pumps on the bar was dispensing four of the breweries beers with Original doubled on two, then Gold, Rare Breed Pale Ale and Coffee Stout on the others. My half of Gold was perfectly pleasant.
A popular pub for its traditional pub food menu but there are plenty of small areas to hide away in just for a pint.

A decent large corner pub that still retains the traditional inn feel about it. The pub is now owned by Butcombe Brewery who have slightly refurbished the pub to give it back some charm. Five handpumps with two from Butcombe, Liberation Brewery Sin Bin, Gower Brewery Up n Under and the fifth pump was a cider. The staff were friendly and chatty and our Butcombe Rare Breed was of the highest quality.

Nice old exterior with a larger than you initially think interior with different "rooms" spread across the split level interior. 6 real ales.

Pub is well described previously , quite busy on my Thursday evening visit , 5 real ales on 2 from Goffs 1 from hillside and 2 from Battledown , my Battledown Natural Selection was a bit ropey , the other 2 pulls were given over to cider .
Not that friendly in here , dont think i would bother again

Externally this is a fine old building. Built in 1661 in honour of King Charles II agreement with parliament to reinstate the Monarchy, The Restoration is one of Cheltenham’s oldest ale houses.
Apparently the main bar area suffered a bit of a fire a couple of years ago and was remodelled after and on first entering the bar area the reaction is “Oh no another bland modern make over “, especially as the Smith and Jones chain pub fare food branding is very evident. But it’s not until you have your drink and you begin to explore the seating options that you realise that there are several different smaller distinct drinking areas to this pub, with the main plain wood floor bar area being modern but the other areas being much more traditional with carpeted floors, open fires, exposed wooden beams and comfortable seating away from the TV screens in the main bar, and in total this is a better pub than you first imagined.
The main bar has seven ale pumps on it and although a couple of these had unexciting offerings like Courage and CW Bombadier, the rest were dispensing local brewery ales in the shape of Goffs Brewery Tournament, Prescott Brewery Grand Prix and three from the Cheltenham SPA Battledown Brewery in the shape of Sunbeam, Premium and one badged as Old Restoration house ale. The Goffs brewery ale and the Cheltenham SPA Premium were well kept.
