A nice surprise, this one. The only pub that I visited more than once over the course of my three days in Brighton at new year. The building has a bit of character, and this is also reflected in the contents of the bar and the people serving behind it. A mission statement describes this as "a traditional pub since 1848", and in support I noted a traditional dark wood bar with traditional brass hooks, traditional bare floor boards, and traditionally green-painted wood panelling and bar back. (Shome mishtake shurely?)

On the beer front, there were Hurst Founders Best, Long Man Blonde, Sharps Doom Bar and Downlands Old Ale. I had the Best to start with, and then came back after popping in to the Mash Tun across the road and tried the Old Ale. This was so good I came back the next night for some more. Tamla Motown on the sound system was another enticement.

A pretty basic traditional pub with four handpumps on the go, Darkstar Hophead,Longman Long Blonde,Hurst Foundation Bitter and Doom Bar,The Long Blonde was in fair condition. There was nothing particularly wrong with this pub but I didn't think there was enough about it to entice me back.

Old traditional pub that's had a bit of a makeover. Wooden floors and bits of historic ephemera dotted around. Four handpumps and an impressive spirit gallery.

The Waggon and Horses isn’t the biggest place and the bar area is quite thin, but I still managed to find a seat on Saturday evening. The bar supports four hand pumps that were drawing Pride, Harveys Best, Doom Bar and Winter Warmer and there is also a standard draught selection alongside Amstel. I opted for a Guinness which was very nice and served with a smile and whilst I was knocking it back I noticed an extensive list of obscure whiskeys that are available. The plasma screen was off and the background music was hardly audible over the chatter from the twenty something crowd. At the rear off the pub there is a quiz machine, fruit machine and jukebox.

There are numerous picnic tables around the side of the pub for smokers in the winter and sun worshipers in the summer.

I thought this pub to be perfectly acceptable and I would have no problem returning.
