Like Malden Man below, I felt that this pub was not aimed at people like me, and perhaps there should be a warning sign near the door: "Under 25s Only". To be fair, it wasn't doing a roaring trade with its target demographic either at the time of my visit, but it was university holidays so they were probably all at home with their parents. On the beer front, just one of the two hand pumps had a pump clip, and Laine Dubloon was not good enough to make up for the downer that this pub was to me. One to put down to experience.

This street corner pub grabs your attention with its striking cobalt blue exterior, once inside you find a rather dingy bare boarded room with the walls painted a mixture of red and the same blue colour. Scrubbed tables, some unusual artwork, there is a rather macabre and to me, tasteless celebrity death board where you predict who is likely to shuffle off next, hmmm.
The cellar drop looks to be in the main room floor, TV on a chimney breast was off, daffodils on the tables and free Wi-Fi advertised.
A sign informs that same sex groups of 5 or more may be refused admission or service and there was a CCTV monitor in a corner. It all felt rather student, young crowd focussed even though I was in at a quiet time around 1pm; student discounts are advertised on certain products. Various burgers advertised but I didn't see anyone partaking.
Two handpumps, Tim Taylor Golden Best which I felt was overpriced at £1.95 a half for a 3.5% beer, Hepworth Prospect was due to come on later.
Heavily graffitied toilets, apparently there is another room upstairs but I couldn't be bothered to take a look. Outside seating too but plastic is mandatory.
I'm probably way too old for this place but then again my 19 year old self would not have been keen either.

Was there last night, great pub, great staff, rough round the edges but good banter and we loved it!

The Mashtun is a small U shaped sweat box of a pub that was busy with student aged people on Tuesday evening last week. Hepworth’s Prospect and Brighton Best were both available from the two hand pumps and there is a standard selection of draught. Although busy I was served quickly, but I wasn’t very impressed in receiving my Guinness in a flimsy plastic cup. It wasn’t busy enough to warrant dipping into the reserve cups so maybe this place gets a bit rowdy in the evenings. There was some loud music being blasted out of the speakers and I didn’t spot any TVs or advertisements for Sky Sports. Food is available and the dearest meal I saw was the Mashtun Mezze for £8. There is some outside seating that is covered by a couple of jumbrellas.

I found it very difficult to get comfortable in here and the locals were not the friendliest of people. I my opinion there are far better options in the area.

No Real ales, but specialises in cocktails and a couple of premium lagers. Bit dark and dreary inside.
