A Hall and Woodhouse tourist trap on the historic Customs Quay. The large ground floor bar is decorated in a rather sterile fashion, wooden floors and tired bon mots written on the walls. The décor is in H&W corporate colours, while the modern service ducts have been badly hidden by wood cladding trying (and failing) to look like timber beams. The WiFI is free, the background music irritating. The staff came across as a bit creepy and were quite inefficient, while the majority of customers seemed to have arrived on mobility scooters. The food was acceptable, though portions were smaller than I would have liked for the price, and there was a very prominent coffee counter offering take-aways as well as freshly brewed refreshments on site. Only two ales on, I had First Call which was in OK condition. It’s fine for inclusion in a crawl as long as you’re not in a hurry and don’t mind lassitude.

It's an ok pub but for some reason it doesn't seem so good after it's been revamped.

And what's with the light blue paint on the outside brickwork?

Another of the tourist traps alongside the quay. Usually three (Hall & Woodhouse) ales on but the service during the summer leaves a lot to be desired. Fairly smart on the plus side, uncontrolled screaming kids running amok on the downside. Much better out of season (like all the other touristy pubs) but overall still only average.

Large upmarket place. To me feels more like a wine bar than a pub. Choice of three Hall & Woodhouse ales which were well kept. Excellent views of the harbour. Free newspapers provided (well 10 copies of the Independent actually). OK but I felt it hard to feel comfortable in here. Kept feeling I was in a restaurant and somebody would appear and take my order any minute.

The Ship Inn is next to the harbour and almost opposite the Kings Arms.
This is an Hall and Woodhouse tied house.
Once inside here the pub is quite smart and lets children in throughout the pub,the pub is one very large room that is split into different drinking areas there is a raised area at the front of the pub which gives good views of the harbour.
There were three real ales on here and we usually had a drink of Badger best bitter which is ok but nothing special the other beers were Tanglefoot and a seasonal from H&W.
This is a decent comfy pub to have a few drinks in.

Manky Badger left this review about The Ship Inn

In 2008 I said about this place "Welcoming friendly pub with three different Badger ales".

I went back two years later. There's now four badger ales, and whilst they are friendly enough, I didn't like seeing a huge sign advertising food all day only to be told the kitchen was closed.

5/10 - average.
