Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Royal Standard

Easily the busier of Upwey's two pubs, I found the Royal Standard a bit too loud for my liking. One of those football score shows was on the TV and some of the locals were getting a little excited with quite a bit of swearing.

On the ale range, Butcombe Bitter is the regular beer. Guests were Pitchfork Birnbeck Bitter & Quantock Wills Neck. There was no real cider.

The pub has a single room spread around the central bar. A busy place that didn't quite hit the spot for me.

I really liked this pub as well. Four fully populated hand pumps on the bar, from which this week I’ve had their own DT3 ale (unfortunately the stronger DT4 wasn’t available), Yeovil Stargazer, and Sunny Republic’s Beach Blonde and Huna Red, at £3.05-£3.30 a pint if memory serves correctly. I’d very happily come back here for different beers than the standard ones found in most pubs locally. Although obviously a drink led pub, they also do food with a £4.95 lunch menu looking like a good deal (which admittedly I didn’t have a chance to try) and there is a pleasant enough beer patio out the back.

A detached white rendered pub with patio at the back, which has a slightly Georgian look to it. It is the GBG 2010 and apparently has started a microbrewery, the DT range.

The interior has a couple of rooms. The first i didn't go in and looked like the lounge/dining area and is in red, white and wood panel, with old photos on the walls - saw it through the back window as i popped in! They do food here, but i didn't eat so can't comment on that. The bar room is in mainly wood panel and cream, with a green tile fireplace and glasses and jugs hanging from the cream and beam ceiling. There was a dart board here and a TV that wasn't on on my visit. General music at a decent level was the entertainment, as well as conversation from the couple of locals in. The service was fine.

Beer; tap stuff with Hopback GFB on handpull, as well as decent offerings from Yeovil Stargazer, Palmers Copper Ale and Butcombe Bitter. I just missed the local brew.

Class. I could have styaed for hours, but alas, i had to guzzle my halves too quickley, but at least it gave me time to appreciate it and recommend it - take a look, you wont be disappointed.
