Described as the oldest pub in Sherborne, this is a charming town centre establishment which is a Marston's tied house. There is no sign of a hotel operation these days, and although the outside has had a modern paint decoration ,the interior is authentic and traditional. There is an open plan bar room, with a real fire to the left side of the bar,a restaurant area to the far left and seating around the bar with two very pleasant seating areas in two bay windows. There is a pool table to the right infront of an inglenook which is not used these days ,probably because it is sited in a lower pit and if alight may catch unwary weavers after a heavy session !
There are 4 handpumps, one dedicated to a cider (Rosie Pig) with ,on my trip Marston's portfolio real ale Hobgoblin Gold,Ringwood Best and Forty Niner (in good shape).
This is a friendly ,laid back pub worth popping into and thankfully hasn't been refurbed or gone gastro.I enjoyed my visit.

Old pub at top of town but not quite sure what to make of it. The appeal of the floral displays and bric-a-brac on the walls is somewhat lessened by a prominent pool table. Offerings included a couple of Ringwood beers, but not impressed with the quality of that sampled, even though Cask Marque listed. Room for improvement.

Proclaiming itself "Sherborne's Oldest Pub", The George is an atmospheric old town pub aimed mainly at the tourist industry. The drinks are a bit pricey, but they do offer some reasonable deals, eg two meals (burger and chips type) with a drink each for £6.50. There is a welcoming air about the place and the staff are friendly and helpful, and well-behaved dogs are welcome too. There is a single large bar with a dining area off to one side, there's a really annoying gaming machine in the main part and there is outside seating overlooking the main shopping street. Two ales and a cider on - I had a pint of the Thatcher's cider which was cool and refreshing. A good place to sit and watch the world go by or to grab a quick bite at lunchtime.

This used to be the starting place for our Sherborne crawls but the beer had been getting worse each visit. The last visit, and going on past experience of the pub, I had a Guinness on the assumption that it would be pretty hard to foul up. Guess how wrong I was! My three mates all had beers of one type or another and all found them pretty dismal and none were finished. However, with the clientele this place attracts we didn't want to make a fuss, so just left. I certainly won't be back, Awful place.

I L left this review about The George Hotel

A traditional pub at the top end of the town with a whitewashed exterior and a small bar as you enter through the main door. There are seating areas off to both sides. We visited late on a Friday night and the place was pleasantly quiet as were othe pubs at this part of town. There were three Ringwood ales shown on hand pump and numerous other pump clips from the Marstons group hanging around the bar. However the Boondongle had just gone and whilst pouring the Ringwood that went so we had the best which was well kept. Despite being late the landlord flushed the hand ump and put a new barrel of Fortyniner on after pouring two halves straight from the barrel and gave us these two halves. It's not often you get this excellent treatment these days. Well worth visiting this pub. we will be back here when next in Sherborne.
