Originally a school built in 1745, The Britannia has recently been renovated and is now an hotel with a restaurant and public bar. It's trying to be all things but not quite hitting the mark. There is a courtyard at the back which has a small garden area, a restaurant which appears to have escaped from 1977 and a bar whose odd flooring and purple back lighting behind the counter make it feel like the foyer of a Hamburg brothel. Staff were very welcoming, and water was provided for dogs. There are high chairs available for children in the restaurant, but the uncomfortable bar seating makes it unlikely families will enjoy being in there. Three ales on, Spitfire, Doombar and Courage Best, all quite flat and past their best. Fine for B&B and I'd include on a crawl, but it's not somewhere I'd go for its beer.

Stone-built town pub with a large stone-flagged bar to the left and a room laid up as a Thai restaurant to the right. fairly plainly furnished but pleasant enough although lacking something. Handpumps included Bombardier, Youngs and a seasonal Marstons brew, which seemed in fair order. Could be a very good pub with a few improvements.

Average town pub. A beautiful building seen from the outside but a bit of a let-down inside, plain and lacking atmosphere and could do with an imaginative redecoration. Welcome warm enough and service OK but I really wasn't impressed by the beer quality.

A former Georgian school building, this terraced undressed stone pub, eatery and B&B also has a skittle alley. It is built on a curve, but now occupies two buildings, one having a bay and dormer windows. Looks great.

The interior, skittle alley excepted, i think had two rooms, but i went into the curved building entrance and couldn't see anything of the other rooms. This room was in a mushroomy colour, with a stone floor and a couple of stove kind of fireplaces, one at either end of the room. There was some brass ephemera around, but i visited early, so there were no other clientele, there was no music and the TV had a silent film on. The service was fine. I didn't eat here, so can't comment on the food.

Beer; tap stuff with Young's Bitter and Wells Bombardier on handpull.

This isn't a bad place at all, but i felt at the time that i wasn't visiting at its best and this was compounded by the fact that the beer choice wasn't really to my taste, so i ended up having a half of Stone Press Cider.
