A back street local from the Georgian period, very much a regulars’ haunt and currently owned by Victoria Inns, so it made a nice change from the Palmers pubs here. There is a single large bar formed by conjoining the earlier rooms, though different areas were demarcated by leaving pillars from the original walls. There was a dart board though it appeared not to have been used for a while, and there were various sports trophies on display. We asked about food but the barmaid didn’t appear to have a clue, and we went hungry. There was a table skittle table, and we were greeted by the pub dog, an aged overweight spaniel cross which perfectly matched the staff. Two ales on, Otter Bitter and Wadworth 6X, both past their best. Also available were Fosters, 1666, Carlsberg, John Smith’s, Hope Lager and 8 from Thatchers. It’s a run down pub that didn’t make us feel that welcome so we probably won’t come back as there are better pubs in the town.
