A recent opening just off of the popular Whiteladies Road strip, this is a sister venue to the Dark Horse in Bath, and whilst it is primarily a cocktail bar rather than your regular pub, there are nonetheless a couple of drinks on tap which should warrant it’s listing here.

First impressions were that I wasn’t even sure if it was open, such was the subdued lighting level coming from within. Immediately inside the door it a small area with some stools in the window to make the most of the outlook, with the bulk of the pub being up a couple of steps with the bar counter at the far end. It’s quite narrow, with booth seating on either side, and the black painted walls and ceiling only add to the ambience or gloom, depending on your point of view. The flooring was some type of wood strip whilst the bench seating was a mixture of pale grey padded backs and burnt orange bases. A large eagle was a prominent feature, but there was little else of any note. There was also a further room downstairs, although we did not investigate this.

According to the menu, the only beer on tap was Wild Beer’s Pogo and the solitary cider was Pilton Cider. That said, there did appear to be three taps on the bar, but this is very much a table service sort of place, and I did not approach the counter to confirm if there was anything else. If you’re after a cocktail though, there was an extensive selection along with a good range of spirits, especially whisky. My Sea of Tranquillity consisted of Beefeater gin, Sipsmith Sloe gin, orange and caraway sherbet, fresh lemon and soda and was a decent and very enjoyable drink, although ambitiously priced at £9.50 perhaps. This is really a tricky one to mark – as a cocktail bar I really liked it and would happily return, and have marked it accordingly. But then this is a pub review website, so if that’s what you’re after you’re not likely to be overly impressed by this.
