As described below, it’s more of a café than a bar. No real ale, and no real cider. Craft ales were Sharp’s Atlantic and Wild Beer’s Pogo. Also on offer were Guinness, Aspall’s cider and 2 foreign lagers. It’s comfortable enough and OK for a snack or a cuppa, but I wouldn’t bother coming here for a few drinks or want to spend the evening here.

My initial thoughts on coming in here was that this was a separate pub from my earlier review. That is to say, I came in a separate entrance to the building, remained on the same floor, and obviously ended up in a different bar. It was only on doing further research when I got home that I realised it was all part of the same Walcot House. So, this should be considered as a supplementary review to the one below, not a replacement.

It's all one large, high ceilinged, open plan room, although it looks as though it extends on further at the back which is presumably a restaurant area. The style is something like shabby chic I suppose, with bare concrete screed on the floor and exposed white brickwork on much of the walls, although there were also a few rugs to soften it a little. That said, there was also wood cladding in places that had been painted maroon, fitted red leather banquet seating, a few mirrors, low level lighting and the odd candle or two, as well as some illuminated twigs.

Unfortunately, there were no real ales on tap, just Atlantic Pale Ale and Wild Beer Pogo on keg. Ciders fared no better with Aspall’s Suffolk. Despite the poor beer choice, I actually quite liked it here, the barmaid was pleasant and friendly and it had a relaxed and chilled out vibe. The menu looked enticing and I shall return at some point to check it out.

Although this opened around Christmas time in a large building in Walcot Street, I was initially unsure whether to add it as I wasn’t really sure if it qualified as a pub or not. They advertise themselves as a bar and club but having now visited and found that there is no restriction on entry and they do have a small range of drinks on tap, I have now added it.

The street level entrance takes you down a flight of stairs to a small hallway with bars off to either side. The bar to the left was apparently “not open yet” when we visited and on leaving saw a Flamenco dancer giving either a demonstration or lesson to a group, so perhaps this is used for private hire. On entering the bar to the right, you find yourselves in quite a long room running front to back with a large wood panelled bar counter in front of you. The flooring is dark laminate boards whilst the walls are a mixture of exposed stonework and dark green wood panelling. Further exposed stone arches were visible along the far wall and the end one had been turned in to a small snug area. The ceiling was painted black although all the exposed air conditioning ducting perhaps detracted somewhat from the elegant feel elsewhere. Lighting was a number of low hanging globed lights that got progressively dimmer whilst we were there. At the rear, beyond some heavy drape curtains, was another large room and further bar counter. This is on occasions used for live music I believe, and the central seating area which was down a few steps created something of the feel of an auditorium. On this occasion though the Six Nations was being screened, although I thought it rather a shame that the commentary for this was piped around the rest of the pub making it difficult to avoid if rugby is not your thing.

Unfortunately there were no ales on tap, real or otherwise, with the only draught offerings being a couple of premium lagers and the rather good Orchard Thieves cider, which you don’t see too often around these parts. Overall, a pretty decent new venture, but it’s obviously not going to appeal to the beer aficionado due to the lack of any suitable offerings.
