Decent looking place with one large room and the bar to the right. Four weak real ales and the rest was keg.

Opening in October 2016, this smart bar and restaurant was launched as a 'high end bistro and bar' is set in a 1920's art deco building, formerly home to the Dormand Stewart & Son raincoat store, which was famous around town for its neon sign which read 'We Shall Have Rain'. The new bar has been fitted out in a very contemporary fashion, with smart wood floorboards, walls painted in warm colours and a servery to the rear which boasts Middlesbrough's longest bar counter, although I don't recall thinking it was anything out of the ordinary. Like most shop conversions, the pub has a simple rectangular layout with the bar to the rear and some partitioning opposite with a long banquette on the other side, supported by a row of tub chairs. Elsewhere there are lots of smaller tables with standard chairs and some long banquettes and comfy booths around the perimeter, all ideal for those visiting as part of a larger group. Large windows down two sides allow for a good deal of natural light in the daytime and some decent people watching opportunities. There's an open section to one side which was initially being used as vertical drinking space but later became a bit of a default dancefloor on my late Saturday night visit. The place seemed very popular with a younger crowd both on the Saturday night and when I passed again at lunchtime the following day. There was some mention of the building's art deco features being maintained during the conversion to a pub, but I have to say, aside from a couple of decorative fixtures here and there, I really see much evidence of this.
The pub's headline selling point is its collection of 40 different gins, so I didn't have much hope on the beer front but to my surprise I found four handpulls in action, dispensing Black Sheep Bitter, Cameron's Strongarm, Theakston Bitter and a house beer called Dovecot Gold, also brewed by Theakston. I gave the house beer a try and thought it was a fairly inoffensive, easy drinking pint.
I didn't really have high hopes for this place, but I thought the proprietors had created a very smart bar that seems to be a step up from the drinking barns that plague the town centre. A choice of ales was a welcome bonus, but this place felt more like a restaurant than a pub and whilst it might be a good place for couples or groups of young people to enjoy a night out, it won't do much for the pub traditionalist.
