A leisurely 20 min walk from New Mills Newtown railway station. This micro is a bit difficult to spot as the shop frontage is so small, if you look out for the florist on the right hand side, you will find it easy enough. As Will describes below, this really is a long and narrow micro. It was a good job that it wasn't mobbed on our Saturday afternoon visit. The interior was painted in blue, with dark blue T & G, up to dado height and lighter blue painted walls. The small bar area had tiled front and oak counter. Four handpumps on the bar, along with a choice of six keg beers on tap served from the back wall. The cask ale choice was Blackjack Rabbit Hunt, Blackjack Stout, Abbeydale Alter Ego and Mrs Stoutfire Collaboration. We went for the Blackjack Rabbit Hunt and Abbeydale, both were in good condition. We took our drinks down the to the rear of the pub near the staircase that leads to a small downstairs room, along with the toilets. As there is limited space, small drinking shelves are attached to the wall, which barely fit two pint glasses on. The owner was friendly and took the trouble to phone a couple of local cabs, to get us back to the station as we were pushed for time, to no avail and we ended up power walking back to the train station and just made the returning train within 3mins.

This new micropub is in a very narrow half-shop unit, sharing the doorway with a florist. The bar is a few paces along on the left, with the four hand pumps facing the incredibly narrow gap which needs to be shared between people who want to sit towards the rear, people sitting at the front who need the toilet, people wanting to read the pump clips before buying and the three people who thought that this was a good place to stay a while and enjoy their drinks and conversation. Thankfully, they were happy to move to allow me to see what was on and to take a photo.

The beer offering looked a bit samey to me, so I plumped for one I hadn't heard of, the local Torrside Beeston, a collaboration between the two named breweries using green hops, which was in good condition but a fairly bland and very pale beer. There's a small shelf running along the wall, above the wood panelling (with hooks), and I was able to stand my glass there while looking around and writing a few notes. As well as the four real ales there were seven or eight keg fonts but I couldn't see what beers were on. There was some background music and the conversational noise level seemed to be well balanced, with about 30 people in but (I would guess) the irregular surfaces and numerous pictures on the walls breaking up the sound waves sufficiently so that no one needed to shout. This was the busiest pub in New Mills at the time of my visit on a Friday evening - the Royal Oak, though much bigger, seemed to have fewer customers.
