A good-sized pub in a prime position overlooking the harbour with a large patio area as well, this inevitably gets very busy in the warmer weather and the queue was snaking out the door on our recent bank holiday weekend visit. That said, they had four or five people serving, and were getting orders turned around quite quickly.

The outside area is clearly the main draw here and that’s where we sat, although from a quick look around the inside it seemed to have quite a high bling factor with chandeliers on the ceiling, gold coloured padded bench seating around much of the perimeter and brass style tiling on the ceiling. Elsewhere though it was perhaps a little more traditional, with some sort of wood strip on the floor, further rough wood cladding on some of the walls, exposed brick pillars and various nautical themed murals. Although a single open plan room, it was segregated in to different areas with a raised area to the right and an even more blingy lounge to the left, with one wall completely covered in fake foliage and roses. Various model animals were around, such as a ram’s head on the wall, and a parrot perched on the pump clips. Large bi-folding doors across the front of the pub made the most of the outlook and there was a selection of colourful arm chairs to sit at and admire the view.

Beers on tap were Sharp’s Doom Bar and Sea Fury, along with Bays Devon Dumpling. Ciders meanwhile were Sharp’s Cold River, Cornish Rattler and Rekorderlig Strawberry & Lime. Overall, certainly a great spot to sit outside in the sunshine, but I wouldn’t make a point of returning if it were more inclement.

Overlooking the harbour and with many external benches to get a fantastic view.

The beer was better than you would expect from a tourist pub - two casks on and the Salcombe Gold was in fine condition.

Location, location, location.

This sea front pub has evolved into a fish and chip café that has got above its station a bit. Only table service was available. Service is inefficient – I waited over 30 minutes for a beer, and the staff appeared friendly but over worked. The food was good, but again took a long time to arrive. Ales on were Doombar and two from Salcombe, Seahorse and Shingle Bay. One real cider was available along with Blue Moon and Atlantic on Keg. The ales were in good condition, but it’s not somewhere I’d rush back to given the time it takes to get served.
