I hadn't planned on including the Old Bridge Inn in my circuit of Holmfirth and its surrounding villages, but after my excursion out to Upperthong for the Farmers Arms my return to the town centre was planned to coincide with the afternoon opening of the Nook, which a gathering crowd in front of that pub's doors informed me had not happened on schedule. So here I was in this modern version of a market town hotel, surely too modern to justify the adjective that precedes Bridge in its name. I always feel awkward in places like this: it should be a pub, and I like pubs, but there's something unpublike about it that makes my elbows feel they are about to do something they shouldn't. Anyway, I managed to get served ok and after finding an out of the way seat - nearer the reception desk than the dining room - was able to appreciate the beer I had recognised among the three hand pumps on the bar from a trip to Huddersfield on New Year's Day: Small World Brewery's Spring Bank Pale, which was once again a very good beer in very good condition (NBSS 3.5). Small world indeed.
