This is a McMullen's pub that had on their Hop & Glory, IPA, AK, and Country (£3.70 a pint). All the beers were being dispensed through sparklers, which unfortunately I didn't notice until the barmaid had already pulled two-thirds of a pint of froth into one of the glasses. Apparently (according to the barmaid) beer looks nicer when pulled through a sparkler. But at least she knew what a sparkler was, and how to remove it on request. I suppose the use of sparklers is a hazard one might expect to encounter when travelling up north to somewhere like Enfield.

The emphasis seemed to be on food when we visited on Thursday afternoon, with just about everyone other than my companion and I dining. Main courses are around £8 - £10, with the pie of the day at £9.40, bangers & mash £7.95, and burger & chips at £7.25. Sandwiches are all £5.55. This all seemed quite reasonable to me.

This place has now been given a smart modern look, with light pastel shades of grey everywhere, and a big pile of logs piled up next to a fireplace seemingly as a decorative feature. The cricketing paraphernalia is all still there of course, with numerous cricket related photographs and prints on the walls, as well as a display of cricket bats on the chimney breast on the left, with a display of cricket balls on the one on the right. There's a sizeable garden to the side of the pub.

This is a reasonable enough place to visit. I saw it as the sort of pub to which you could take your mother. The beer was in good shape, once we had resolved the sparkler issue, and it has quite a nice setting away from the main road. I'd happily visit this one again.

Popped in last night for the first time in 40+ years (as well as the Crown & Horseshoes next door) and another pleasant surprise! The Cricketers is now a very welcoming pub with a good atmosphere. Service was quick and efficient and my pint of McMullens AK was very good indeed. The clientele on my visit was almost exclusively drinkers. Menu is standard pub fare and appears to be good value - we'd already eaten, so perhaps next time. Better than average and, because of its warm atmosphere plus it is out of the town centre, I think it is worth searching out.

Situated just off Chase Green, down a narrow road, is The Cricketers, a pub that externally, to a certain extent, resembles a cricket pavilion. The exterior is white washed and has a white picket fence topped with decorative replica cricket balls. As we approach the pub, we see a cricket scoreboard style sign advertising Lagers, Beers, Wines – “LBW”.

Inside the pub the cricketing theme continues with numerous pictures on display including earlier years Middlesex C C C teams. Of particular interest is a display of old bats by the side of a fireplace. Less attractive, in my view, are the set of lager fonts in the form of a set of cricket stumps and bails and a series of lights in the shape and colour of cricket balls. I’m a big cricket fan, but I’m afraid the whole cricketing theme is rather overdone.

The main bar is long and bare boarded with a number of nooks and crannies flanked by larger seating areas at each end. The area on the left is carpeted, has several sofas by a fireplace and a smallish unobtrusive TV which was showing Man Utd v Man City. A number of tables in this area were reserved for diners and, whilst drinkers are certainly not discouraged, the food trade seems to dominate, with a number of family and mixed groups enjoying the substantial looking pub grub meals during my visit.

It’s a McMullens pub which, on my visit, was offering AK, Country, Cask and IPA. Perhaps not surprisingly, the AK - £ 2.76p – was rather more expensive than at The Wonder, from where I had just come.

The Cricketers is a pub that appears to be trying to cover all bases and, although it seemed to be making a good fist at doing this, this is not a pub worth going far out of your way to visit.
