An isolated pub amongst muddy footpaths and scrubby trees. If it's too wet to walk through from the A57 Hyde Road, there are longer routes through back streets. It felt worthwhile to have found it, a nice little multiroomed pub with a bit of a time warp feel to it. Three hand pumps, with beers at the time of my visit as depicted in photos (which I've only just got around to uploading). My half of Moorhouses Straw Dog was nothing to write home about (NBSS 2.5). Opening times are a bit different from those given by ROB Camra in his 2015 review (below) - probably a good idea to check Facebook if planning a visit.
I went from here to the nearby Plough on the main road, where they had no real ale. According to one of the regulars I got chatting to there, the Cottage is "packed out" on Saturdays, with everyone drinking real ale.

Beware of the old fashioned opening times. I called just after 5 expecting it to be open. They open 12 - 4 then 7 - 11 through the week and 12 - 4 7 - 11:30 on Friday.

A country haven in the town. Surrounded by trees this pub is a survivor. It has a homely but well kept feel. Real Ales served are Taylors Landlord, Theakstons Black Bull and occasional guests.
The pub reopens on November 4th after a short closure due to a change of landlord.
