The Forest Tavern is a pub located on the busy Mansfield road near the junction with Forest road. This pub is now predominantly a music venue with a door at the back leading to a large music room (The Maze) with a stage and live music almost every night of the week. With such a large proportion of the trade aimed at the gig goers means the Forest tavern is pretty redundant if not going to a gig. Upon entering there are two separate rooms that have been knocked through into one while still retaining the feel of two areas. The bar is to the right room which is square with almost no tables or seating whatsoever except a large hogs had in the middle for resting pints and a few high chairs. The left room slightly more lounge with a bit more seating but is really just an extension of the right room. The pub is hard floor throughout and has a very gritty dirty feel to it and in my opinion in need of a good clean up. This used to be under the control of Castle Rock but the former owner has now left to set up the Imperial brewery in Mexborough, South Yorkshire with four of their ales appearing on the bar. I had a pint of their Classical Bitter at £3 which was off and had hints of vinegar. The very carefree barman hurried downstairs and changed the barrel (he did not clean the line first he just pulled a new beer straight through) and this was better but not conditioned to an exceptional standard simply drinkable. We sat and enjoyed our beer while people came in and out of the concert room. This is really not the sort of place to come and have a beer its really just the bar for people now wanting to see a gig and unless there is a band you are really compelled to go and see I would give this place a miss as its not great drinking in here.

This is a Georgian styled pub and music venue. The pub part is still called the Forest Tavern, a name it had in the Victorian period. The music venue is at the rear of the building and called The Maze. The pub sits next to (at the rear) a Jewish cemetery, in use from 1822-c1863. The building is of three storeys and in plain brick, with stone surround to the lower windows and architrave above the door. The interior has one room now, the old ones having been ripped out - the Maze is behind and I didn't see it. The main room is in pale green and grey, with a bit of red and a dark green ceiling. The flooring is a mix of wood and tile. The walls are decorated with lots of B&W photos of musicians from various decades, along with a few mirrors. There are a few barrels, used for tables, as well as high stools - many looking like miniature dentist chairs. There is also a piano. The service was friendly and there was just one other person in. Beer; usual tap stuff with Castle Rock Preservation, HPA, Elsie Mo and Black Gold - the latter being tasty, but flat looking. All-in-all it is a pub that has a good choice of Castle Rock beers - so I would be more than happy to go to a gig here. Worth a pop in.
