Lighter brighter and a bit less alluring than before. The wood panelling remains in the main bar and it’s still fairly pleasant. However it feels like more of a food operation now and therefore there’s very few spare seats to be had for a casual pint when it gets busy (almost every evening April-September then). Added irritation from the yahoos who allowed their dogs to slouch all over the floor causing trips and hazards, unadmonished by the staff. Three pumps, all Brains; the SA was a bit tinny (NBSS 1.5), the Rev James Gold a better (2.5). Not what it was.

The most characterful of the three Aberdovey pubs with a traditional feel, this is located the furthest from Aberdovey BR - just over five minutes east along the seafront terrace past the other two pubs in the town. Enter by the right-hand door (the left goes directly into the restaurant room). Lots of wood cladding seating, with the bar separated into two areas by the large chimney mentioned below. No music or electronics here, only conversation, the crash of the surf and a ticking clock for aural accompaniment. A line of toby jugs grin down at you from above the bar. Two Brains ales on the go - Rev James and Bitter, which were both spot-on. Posh fish dishes on the menu were selling well. A big push is made on the accommodation and the coastal-facing slate terrace to the left of the pub - for residents only - looked magnificent on the sunny day of my visit. If you only have time to do one of the three pubs in Aberdovey, make sure it is this one. Rated 7

Small bar attached to the main hotel building that functions more as a restaurant for the hotel than a proper pub. However since the previous reviews they have converted most of the small triangular car parking space opposite into an external beer garden. Not only does it have excellent views of the estuary but it also catches the afternoon sun and was a great spot for a late afternoon pint.
Same three Brains beer on and we tried both the Brains Bitter and SA which were well kept and thoroughly enjoyable being consumed in the setting evening sun.

I visited this pub around 20 years ago and I'm sure it was a large square basic room so either my memory is wrong or it has completely changed. As described below it is now a small rather narrow room with wooden floors and set up more for food although I wouldn't call it a gastropub. Like the Dovey Inn up the road it is a Brain's pub and three of their beers were on the bar Bitter, Rev James and the seasonal Bread of Heaven. I went for the bitter (£2.95) which again was in excellent condition and a much better beer than I remembered from the past. It's a bit too foody for me but worth a look. Earlier in the Dovey Inn the young barman told me he had never been in here and I have to say I also preferred their sister pub.
