Well described by Blackthorn, below, this modern, well-kept Marston's estate pub is a cut above similar establishments nearby. We received a warm welcome from a pleasant barmaid, and there were a couple of families dining, including well-behaved children. There were a couple of vending machines and TV screens, but otherwise it was reasonably pleasant. Ales on were Pedigree and Directors, plus a keg selection of Carlsberg, Inch's Cider, Stella, Thather's Gold and Haze, Guinness, Moretti and Cruzcampo. Food was not high-end but it was well-microwaved and nicely presented. OK for what it is, but not a destination of choice.

A relatively new, purpose built Marston’s pub in the “village” of Wick-St-Lawrence that is now just a suburb in the ever expanding sprawl of Weston-super-Mare, it is located alongside a Chinese take-away and a couple of empty retail units with which it shares it’s car park.

Internally, the décor has the usual, non-descript, generic look of most modern chain pubs with red patterned carpet on the bulk of the floor, wood strip elsewhere and various shades of paintwork on the walls including pale blue, lemon and burgundy. There was some exposed stone walling at either end and a few recessed shelves contained vases and such like. There was some bland, generic artwork on the walls, and a free-standing, dual-aspect fire-place. A fairground style grab machine full of toys was next to the bar. A table just inside the door had a Father Christmas and some tinsel on to showcase the Christmas menu – Really? In August?

Food wise, the laminated menu offered an extensive selection of pub grub dishes such as sausage & mash, steak & ale pie, lasagne, etc., as well as numerous curries, sandwiches, grills, salads, burgers, etc., with most of the main courses being somewhere around the £7 mark. My first choice of Thai yellow curry was apparently unavailable due to a “problem with the supplier”. Perhaps if the chef had spent a little less time drinking in the bar and a bit more time in the kitchen, he might have been able to rustle up his own version. I then went for the Chicken Enchiladas which were actually quite tasty, although the flour tortillas had turned in to a rather soggy gloop.

Beers on tap were Adam Henson’s Rare Breed, Gold and Yeti from Butcombe along with Pedigree and King of Swing from Marstons. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold and Stowford Press. I’ve mixed feelings about this. The staff were friendly, there was a half-decent, if unexciting range of beers, and I’m sure it serves the local populace well enough in an area where there is little competition. But it not’s really the sort of place that anyone is going to make a special effort to get to.
