Re-opened recently after being closed for a few months, this was originally the Smile’s Brewery Tap, and since they went bust has variously been the Colston Yard, The Yard, and now the Bristol Yard. A slightly odd choice perhaps since it took it’s name from the yard at the rear of the premises which is still quite clearly called Colston Yard according to the street signage, but it would seem that the new owners are pandering to the PC brigade who want all references to Edward Colston airbrushed from history.

Internally the layout is largely unchanged, but has clearly had something of a refurbishment and now looks quite modern. It’s divided in to front and back rooms separated by a central bar counter with blue tiling around it, and now has something of a bijou feel with a sanded wooden floor, pale cream paintwork, aqua blue bench seating along the front arranged in to pods at right angles to the windows and some exposed brick work along the left hand side. Lighting was a mixture of low hanging metal globes and down lighters on the walls, whilst a large illuminated sign spelt out the pub’s name. Large windows are at the rear of the pub, but nearby rooftops obscure much in the way of any views.

Despite six hand pumps on the bar, only three were in use dispending a trio from Butcombe – Original, Giant Goram and Flying Eddie. Ciders meanwhile were Ashton Press and the excellent Orchard Pig Reveller. There was also an extensive cocktail list if that’s more your thing, and these were apparently all available as part of a 2-4-1 deal. Do check before travelling if making a special journey, as the opening hours appear to be somewhat irregular and we have found it closed on a number of occasions.

This is a well run pub with a spacious interior, it did feel a bit like a hotel, but nevertheless their Butcombe Rare Breed was excellent, so glad I popped in. Six handpumps in use on our visit. Would defo call again.

A long-overdue revisit to this modern conversion of the old Smiles brewery tap. Things have settled now and not much has changed beyond the place gaining little of that elusive ‘lived-in’ feel. This trip I noted the addition of a number of tasteful ‘in action’ colour prints of old jazz trumpeters, a potted history of the Smiles brewery and that the late afternoon catches the sun head-on, which is either amazing or irritating depending on your preference. The six pumps were dispensing four ales on my Monday evening visit, three Butcombe and a Black Country Brewery offering. My Butcombe Matthew IPA was a nice refreshing drop and fair price at £1.65 for the half, served by a friendly bar lady. An upmarket and younger clientèle were enjoying their tipples amongst the restrained décor; a mix of modern prints, Bristolania and breweriana. Whilst there are better pubs in BS1 for ale range or ‘pubby’ atmosphere, this one is a good all-rounder and is a model of how to create a modern venue that appeals across a broad range of discerning punters. Well done Butcombe for Getting It Right.

Sited on the former Smiles Brewery Tap, I think Butcombe have done a super job on this - there's a good feel to the place and I think it's a good venue to market good beer to the under 40 age-range; my drinking chums are certainly impressed with it. It’s quite a contemporary café-bar style interior; perhaps a bit anodyne to some tastes but the old Brewery Tap interior was destroyed before Butcombe took the place on. There is a rear area set for formal dining. During my visit there was an excellent range of five well-served ales (three Butcombe plus two guests), complimented by an interesting selection of bottled stuff in the fridges – American, Belgian and German, with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on tap. Food is available but it looked a bit pricey for me. This place has a bright future; I look forward to my next visit.
