Great boozer - not least cause it was 5 hours since I set off from Rosthwaite in the morning.
Went for Thwaites Lightfoot - enjoyed in their beautiful beer garden with wonderful views (as you would expect).

It was very quiet when I was here before Christmas, but according to the landlord this was because there had been a number of cottage holiday cancellations because of the weather and the state of the roads. Normally, he says, it's a gold mine because it's the only place serving meals in the whole Newlands valley. (Personally, I'd rather make the extra journey to Braithwaite, Portinscale or Keswick, but then again perhaps the food is pretty good.) The (only available) beer was a bit ropey: Theakstons Black Bull Bitter on its last legs - a consequence of the lack of trade, I expect. This is a genuinely old building, similar to the Kings Head at Thirlspot except that the main road was diverted many years ago to the present speedy route across the formerly marshy area between Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake, so there is no passing trade worth the name. This old place features genuine old beams, genuine rough plaster on the stone walls, old photos of the pub and other local scenes on the walls, and - a real feature, this - a very old dresser that has been incorporated as a room divider (see photo). I'll come back in the spring/summer and see if it's any better (hope to get a better photo too!).
