Is it really more than 10 years since I was here? I think I may have been in but not updated my review because this pub just doesn't ever seem to change. It's owned by the nearby Langdales Estate, which has its own restaurant and bar, called Stove, but this is on the outer edge and acts as part of the village. There are seven hand pumps, with two Wainwright beers (Gold and Amber), plus two local beers in very good condition, and another being line cleaned and pulled through. I found it hard to relax because of the dreadful – and I mean truly dreadful - Christmas music. If it hadn't been so dire the pub rating might have been a seven. Bah humbug.

Seriously though, the beer here was better than at the Britannia just down the road in Elterwater (there I had two beers NBSS 3 and a disappointing 2; here both beers were 3.5); I don't know if it's consistently the case, but I'll have to come back again soon to check it out.

All of seven hand pumps now adorn the bar here - on my visit they had Derwent Carlisle State Bitter, Yates Landlord's Choice, Dent Aviator, Cartmel Hurdler, Jennings Cumberland and Sneck Lifter, plus Banks's Original (or mild): that's five different Cumbrian breweries and only one outsider.

This looks like a fairly modern building, and the low beams are certainly not very old. The bar is based around barrels that support each corner. There are framed extracts from a hotel register on the walls, detailing climbers' routes, presumably written for the benefit of mountain rescue teams. There was music playing but it was drowned out by an extractor fan (I'm not sure that the other way round would have been an improvement).

If you're staying in the village, there's no need to go either up or down the valley in search of a decent pint, and if you're following my "Central Lake District by bus" pub crawl, you should definitely plan to include this one in your schedule.
