ORIGINAL REVIEW Nov 2015
A traditional village pub with a very pleasing exterior,it has recently been taken over by a new team who have reinvigorated the place. As you would expect there are low ceilings, beams ,flatstone floors and a very attractive inglenook to the right with a log burner. To the left is a section with leather sofas infront of another fireplace full of logs, the bar is in the middle ,bench seating around the inglenook with a charming small alcove to one side. There is a side restaurant with a brick faced well with water 10 feet down ,lit at night. The restaurant just has pine furniture and is less inviting, but practical when busy.
It's tied to Hall & Woodhouse ,so expect their unexciting beers,Badger First Call and Tanglefoot on my trip. However the big draw is the food with a very good Bar Menu at lunchtimes with most mains around £8 and all freshly prepared by a proper chef,no food service dross here.My chips were among the best I've ever tasted. There is also a short list of daily special mains at £11.In the evening ,in addition to the bar menu there is an interesting a la carte offers dishes such as a trio of duck or a bouillabaisse at higher price points. It looked a classy offering. The staff were friendy, attentive and welcoming.
However the pub is not dominated by food, there is a skittle alley and Friday night live music and no doubt a pubby atmosphere.B&B rooms to let and free wifi as well.
I enjoted my visit with the only negatives being the dull real ale options and slightly intrusive muzak when the pub is quiet but I can see myself using this pub time and again for a very decent pub meal.

UPDATE
New lessees have taken over, and there has been an internal repaint in light grey,a pool table is installed in the room on the way to the skittles alley and the ale selection from four handpumps is free of tie.The food menu is solid pub grub ,well cooked and this is the main draw. The lunchtime menu includes a carvery on Sundays, while the evening menu is a bit more expensive for slightly more upmarket sounding dishes but not haute cuisine.
The ale selection on my recent trip was Sharps Sea Fury,Cottage Brewing E Type,St Austell Cousin Jack (OK condition,a 6 Nations brew honoring Cornishman Jack Nowell) while the fourth handpump was reversed, although this is likely to be a Locale as the Cerne Abbas brewery van was making a delivery.
A decent place for a pub grub meal, now with some real ale variety which makes it popular with locals as well as visitors to these parts.

A recently renovated village pub which still smells of fresh paint, the business taken over by a new, enthusiastic landlord this year following a succession of business failures (the pub, not the new landlord). There is a good sized car park from which you can enter the pub through a neatly arranged garden, part grassed and part concreted, with plenty of bench seating. Leaving the car park afterwards can be hazardous due to drivers speeding through the village. Once inside there is a long bar with a flagged floor, exposed timbers and a wood burner, next to which is a large, echoey games room with a wooden floor and pool table. There is also a skittle alley, but this was locked when we visited, and a restaurant area at the back. Food was of the basic pub grub variety plus good value Sunday lunches. The staff were very amenable, while it was clear they made the villagers’ requirements a priority (in a good way), though some of the locals were a bit hostile. There is a basic wine selection while on the bar were 7 handpumps serving Twisted Cider’s Misty, Exmoor XPA, Lynn’s Figgy Mild and Yeovil’s Summerset. The beers were in excellent condition, beautifully kept and offered in a choice of glass. A very good place to stop for lunch or a few pints, I’d include on a motorised crawl, but be aware that it doesn’t open Mondays.
