All glass and shiny chrome with uncomfortable furniture, it does look like an upmarket café but the beer from a bank of five handpumps is first class. I dare say most people will either love or hate the surroundings, personally the word soulless, or robotic comes to mind. It does have toilets although they're so far away you may think they're in another building.

I suspect like many visitors to Kro, I came away more than a little bemused (particularly having previously just visited Mother Mac’s). It really does challenge your pre-conceptions of what a drinking venue should be like. ROBCamra’s analogy of an IKEA café certainly hits the mark, but you could also add factory canteen and airport departure lounge into the mix. You probably get the idea - the extended L-shape interior is all very modern, pared back and debatably sterile.

Its saving grace for the ale drinker is the presence of five hand pumps on the bar, on this occasion serving Deuchars, Landlord, Bombardier and Robinsons ‘Ginger Tom’ and ‘Chocolate Tom’. Quality was OK and at three pounds a pint a little less than I expected to pay for a trendy central bar. Service from our young barmaid was pleasant enough, but noting Chris87’s point below, I should imagine our experience on a Wednesday lunchtime was very different from an evening visit, particularly the weekend. Surprisingly busy when we called, with a decent mix of diners, casual drinkers and pushchair wielding yummy mummies, seeking revival through cake and cappuccino. Whether or not I’d return, if in the area, I’m not entirely sure. Probably not. However, I’d definitely give it a wide berth if the under twenties were coming out to play.
