The former Bull was thoroughly refurbished some years ago in an upmarket style with tasteful furniture and decor. Although largely a restaurant, there is still a decent-sized rectangular bar (with a real fire) on the right-hand side of the front entrance. The substantial rear beer garden is hope to the annual Milkfest four-day music festival and other events, and accommodation is offered too. Normally has three beers on handpump: the regular Harveys (£4.20), a local ale and a guest (Purity Pure Gold on this visit).

A large, pebble dashed building that could have been a Hall House in a former life. Until recently, this was the Bull, and had languished under a succession of short lived tenancies. The few times that I had visited were coincident with patronising the Tandoori over the way. After a period of closure and neglect, the pub reopened as The Milk House,( an early name for Sissinghurst) in September 2013.
As is the current way,it majors on food, and describes itself as “Village Pub, Rooms,Dining”, and is decorated in a tasteful offwhite, even milky colour.Rather minimalist, too;no curtains, so some rooms are rather echoic.
We’ve visited a couple of times:firstly back in the autumn, when we had a rushed meal with friends. Naturally, we weren’t rushing, but the beautifully prepared but small dishes were served at top speed. However, the beer-Old Dairy’s Red Top was well kept and recommended. On my second time, I had a quick beer-I was rushing this time-in the airy bar. Most people were outside in the garden, though a comfortable buzz obtained inside.Again, the beer (Spring Top from Old Dairy) was perfect. Harvey’s ubiquitous Sussex Best Bitter and Well Sprung from Rother Valley were also available, alongside the usual fizzy and cold offerings.
I hope the pub succeeds, as the village is much more attractive with it as a going concernIt certainly appears busy when we pass by.

A large 16th. Century pub by the church , clad in the familiar Fremlins white pebble dash.
A large public bar to one’s right, with a dining room to the left. When I last went in, in the early stages of the world cup, a few families were enjoying the large gardens, while a few old boys were watching some interminable game, enlivened by the blare of the vuvuzelas.
It was early on a Sunday evening, and I was waiting for the Tandoori opposite to complete our order. Two beers on handpump-Harveys Sussex Best Bitter(compulsory in this area) and Sheps Masterbrew. The Harveys was OK, but really too cold to enjoy.
Not a bad pub, but with some careful investment it could be a cracker.
