Situated fairly close to urban areas, but actually in countryside and approached by a lane, this pub has the look and feel of a family dining pub as you approach. There is a large pub garden with lots of play equipment opposite the pub, just across the large car park, which was well populated with vehicles on our Thursday lunchtime visit.

On entering, my 9-year-old plonked himself down at a table opposite the bar and made himself at home, as he so often does after touring more pubs around the country than most adults! Bar staff immediately warned us that kids were not allowed in the bar area. The assumption was that all families would be here to dine and kids could play in the garden whilst waiting for food, whilst drinkers could be left alone in peace. Unfortunately we didn't fit into the pre-defined categories.

The barmaid did offer to find us a table in the dining area, but sitting amongst lots of families eating was not our cup of tea. Neither was sitting in the beer garden drinking out of plastic glasses amongst screaming kids! Luckily there was a table free in the quieter conservatory, which felt much more relaxed despite the overwhelming smell of fish on the next table!

Greene King Abbot is the regular beer here. Whatpub states that there are 8 guest beers. However, the stout I chose was off, leaving just 4 guests - Lord's Staggersaurus Blonde, Daleside Monkey Wrench, Anarchy Blonde Star & Timothy Taylor Landlord. Monkey Wrench was a decent enough alternative for me. Whatpub also states that there is a discount for CAMRA members, but none was offered. Again, perhaps I didn't fit into the conception of a CAMRA member?!

Despite not quite fitting into the pub's targeted clientele, this place does have a nice location and a half decent beer selection. Not too bad, despite not being in the Good Beer Guide since 2016.

This old oak beamed Free House pub is steeped in history and was a coaching inn with its origins dating back to 1760. The pub is open-plan with a long bar, dining area and conservatory all with the warm and friendly atmosphere of a traditional pub. The impressive selection of ‘real ales’ made us stay a lot longer than we intended.
