Originally a 18th Century cider house, this convivial village pub is small, atmospheric and welcoming. It looks a bit shabby from the outside, but it's been well restored inside. There is an unlit, well-hidden car park on the adjacent corner (which, as Jonathan says below, may soon be developed leaving no proper parking for the pub) and a small untidy paved garden with tables and umbrellas. The public bar consists of 2 room opened out and offset to give a Z-shape, the counter at one end and a woodburner the other. There is a separate dining room which has a glass cover in the floor under which the pub's original well can be seen. The décor is still a bit 1970s – mock-Tudor fake timbers contrasting with the real structural timbers, plenty of Artex, and a tiled floor - but it's in good condition. The locals were friendly, the staff eager to help. Two ales on, Exmoor Bitter and Otter Bright, both on good condition. Well worth stopping for a beer or two, but the opening times are irregular so check before making a special trip.

After initially photographing this pub and noting the evening opening hours with no weekend daytime hours so was unable to visit when I took my picture. I thought I best try and contact them to confirm that they would be open for my planned visit today as coming from Bristol. After contacting by phone the previous evening to confirm hours and that they definitely would be open as per advertised I hatched a rough but not ideal plan to finish an add on area bordered by main roads that I had done all the pubs in so this was the last to do.

The person I spoke to confirmed yes they open as per hours however also revealing they have had planning approved for conversion and new development on the car park across the road so that made me more determined to visit today as I've learnt from the past about not entering a pub that looks like it could close when you have the chance to as it invariably may.

Arriving just after it opened I entered via a flag stoned corridor in the centre of the building with the entry to the bar straight ahead so you veer right to enter the main room and bar which has a open fire on the rear wall of the building. I didn't actually note what was off to the left other than the kitchen area as you neared the bar when you veer right. Potentially toilets as I couldn't see an obvious location for them elsewhere.

The main room is essentially two rooms as the front half of the building is opened up from what would've been a separate room in the past to merge in with the bar area

There were 3 hand pumps on with 2 in use on my visit although may be wrong but Otter was being served from one. After arriving a stream of people began to arrive and the person serving started to recount the story of the previous nights enquires to them to then jokingly look at me and say "It's not you is it?" to which I chuckled and said yes.

I enjoyed this pub and it has more of a village pub feel to the alternative pub in the village which is very food lead and could be classed more as a destination pub for miles around because of it, over being a village local.

If it does shut and cease trading it will be a shame because if this was my local I'd be upset. If you get the chance to visit do so before it's too late.
