Still smells fairly heavily of damp; maybe to be expected but even so, not ideal. Bar billiards table remains and still semi-unplayable (though it is at least free, so fair enough). Six cask on over seven pumps, my Hobsons Champion was in good nick (NBSS 3.5). Some interesting keg plus good bottle choices supplement though maybe my memory is playing tricks but are there fewer bottles than I remember? There are no tomes any longer listing them all. Enjoyable pub banter, posing the question "can deaf people still have tinnitus?" The answer is yes. It’s a good bolt hole and a standard shoo-in for a crawl round the city centre.

November 2014
Hard-to-locate subterranean bar with the inevitable faint smell of damp accompanying it. Apparently owned by the same people who have the Welly, the ethos is the same – a plethora of ales at the bar (8) from far and wide, plus some ciders. My Hobsons Mild was in good shape. There’s also a vast amount of foreign bottles with a thick, descriptive menu at the table. Encouragingly there was a bar billiards table but discouragingly one whole side was up against the wall so it’s not really usable for a serious game unless you’re allowed to pull it out? No daylight and muted lighting means it’s dangerously easily to doze off after a couple! Cream and red décor, with hops hanging from ceiling, some hung foreign beer signs and a bottle collection snaking round the high shelf. Like the Wellington, no music or TV. Also like the Welly you can bring your own food. WiFi can be leeched off Greggs next door. A great addition to the town centre. Rated 8

Paid a re-visit recently on a weekday afternoon. I wasn't quite as enamoured as I was on my 2019 visit but that may in part have been down to the beer selection on the day, and the one I went for had a bit of an odd aroma. It wasn't my favourite beer of the day. Fairly busy around 4pm midweek. Six of seven hand pulls at the bar were in service for real ale, and there was a menu behind the bar listing a further seven ciders, which is quite impressive.

Furniture is basic and functional, certainly perfectly adequate. Loads of old bottles filled a shelf going round the perimiter of the room at high level. Unfortunately the gents are extremely smelly - perhaps being underground the drainage from the trough style urinal could be problematic.

I'll probably give it another go at some point, and it's worth seeking out if you have never been before.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Post Office Vaults

Compact cellar bar, with a rather difficult-to-spot main door on New Street and a more obvious entrance on Pinfold Street. Fairly plain furniture and decor. Somehow they have managed to fit in seven handpumps and a few keg fonts onto the compact counter. Usual excellent selection in a variety of styles on my latest visit, including a pair of milds: Champion from Hobson's and Bostin' from Green Duck (£4.40). NB - If you are thinking of meeting someone here, you might want to know that not all mobile networks have a signal inside.
