This is a detached Marston's pub with a conservatory, patio, beer garden and kid's play areas. It is at least Victorian, and may take its name from the animal pound that stood opposite back then. It looks like a cottage; four plain windows, with a central door, which has been extended to the side. It is in white painted brick, with black paintwork. The interior has a front drinking area and rear dining lounge, served by an island bar. The lounge was empty at our early visit. It appeared to be inwhite and flowery wallpaper and had a fireplace. The front bar has a side area with pool and darts. It is in white, with a white and beam ceiling and a red tile floor. It has a few fireplaces (1 brick and 1 tile), with red seating. Old local photos, brasses and other trappings are dotted about. The place does pork pies and sausage rolls too. It is dog friendly and the clientele seems to be local. The TV wasn't on and there was no music. The service was fine. It is in the GBG. Beer; usual tap stuff, with Pedigree, Boondoggle, Ringwood 49er, Sunbeam, Banks's Bitter and a very good Banks's MILD on handpull. A great pub, one with near everything to please near everyone. Worth a visit, but make sure someone else drives.

Danny O'Revey left this review about Gate Inn

Pub situated on road junction with a car park & play area at the rear.

Its a little basic inside with 3 main areas and a games room. Old fashioned and with the feel of a pub used to serve local industry rather than its setting in the countryside.

The restaurant seemed very busy and there were themed food nights.

6 real ales, though its a tied Marstons house so they are all Banks/Marstons/Ringwood/Jennings. Quality was ok, I believe it is in the Good Beer Guide 2012.
