***k me, you know when you're in a London suburban pub! I entered a quiet backstreets local, with the door from the small front terrace leading directly into the main room; there's a smaller room to the left, as well as an extension to the rear leading to the garden.

The bar supports 3 pumps from the Asahi list - Pride & ESB this time, with the 3rd unused. A standard keg selection is available as well. I tried both of the ales and found both to be in excellent condition.

But, a while later, I left a backstreets local and its small crowd of sweary regulars with mixed feelings. I'm no shrinking violet, but this wasn't the most comfortable experience. Time your visit would be my recommendation, which seems to align with the findings of previous visitors.

One of several back street pubs in the New Town area to the east of Sutton town centre, the Little Windsor, so called to distinguish it from the larger and earlier Windsor Castle in Carshalton, is a smart, well kept Fullers pub. There are two front entrances, both leading in to a split level, U-shaped room. The lower left hand side is set up as a carpeted lounge with half panelled walls, high tables and stools down the left hand side and a bench and some standard chairs to the rear. A nice fireplace acts as a focal point in this half of the room and a TV on the back wall was showing the afternoon’s football fixture. The right hand side of the pub is dominated by the L shaped servery which runs towards the rear of this bare boarded half of the room. Walls are again half panelled, this time with floral patterned wallpaper above. A large Fullers mirror hangs on the wall alongside some blackboards listing wine and ale options, and there is a fair bit more seating, especially to the rear, where things open out a little bit. Another screen, close to the front door, was showing the same match and the whole place was packed with fake Chelsea fans ‘supporting’ their team by drinking lager and shouting at the TV. I suspect this isn’t the normal order of things in here, as I noticed at least two couples enter the pub, see the large crowd, mutter something about the ‘bloody football’ and turn round to head off elsewhere. There is a small patio with benches at the front of the pub which was very popular with the smokers, and a larger one to the rear which remained empty.
On the bar, three Fullers ales – London Pride, ESB and Seafarers – were complimented by a guest, which on this visit was Ossett Big Red. I tried the latter and whilst I initially thought it was okay, it quickly went very flat and was a bit of a struggle to finish. The pub is good beer guide listed however, so perhaps I was unlucky on this occasion. Hot food is available, but the scrum around the bar meant I didn’t get a look at the menu, although I could spot some filled rolls piled up on the end of the counter (£2).
I thought this was a pretty good backstreet boozer in an area not really renowned for likeable pubs. I have no doubt that I saw this place in the wrong light on this visit, but there was plenty to suggest an enjoyable time could be had here and I’d happily return.

This is a compact and cosy Fullers pub serving a good range of their ales. Chiswick, Pride, ESB, Discovery and the seasonal Jack Frost (£3.40) were available the other day. The bar is straight ahead on entering, the single space winds around each side, further to the right where it eventually leads to an elevated outdoor area. Internally, it is clean, comfortable and well appointed, the other side extends to what was likely once the snug, here there is an unusual lighting fixture above the fireplace consisting of a pair of lamps clasped between a tiger's mouth. The same fireplace houses a box of London Drinkers, plus unusually some other regional CAMRA publications from around the country.
Mostly traditional seating, in what is a proper pub, albeit with small candles on the tables. Live sport shown on the TVs which are distributed around, but this doesn't strike me as the type of pub which would be allowed to become noisy or boisterous.
I liked it here and wouldn't hesitate to drop in again, a good old fashioned back street local. Covered and heated seating also available to the street frontage.
