Bit of a disappointing revisit from previous. Seems to have lost a bit of sparkle at the bar, with a blander ale range compared to previous; Youngs Bitter, Wells Bombardier, Otter Bitter, Hogs Back Surrey Nirvana and Bond Railway Porter alongside Cheddar Valley cider (all ales £3pp on Mondays). I also had to wait a while to be served as the barman faffed about with tasks unrelated to getting money in the till. However, I had no complaints with the quality of my Porter and Nirvana. Popped out enjoy the fantastic rear garden after getting my mind warped by the large flatscreen TV showing nothing but a loop of country and coastal scenes. The atmosphere is still good, with a friendly set of punters in attendance. It’s still a good pub, but not quite the essential one I visited previously.

October 2013
Traditional brick build with a big front extension, the multi-area'd interior has been sympathetically modernised. Wood predominates the decor with painted panelling, wooden floor and gantries. Objects d'art include mummy case and antique clocking-in machine. Real fire and wood burning stove (lit and very warm). Mid-market pub grub available, CAMRA gumpf to read, darts, big TV (muted), jukebox, cloud WiFi and advertised live music. Six pumps sporting five ales (Otter Bitter, Ramsbury Bitter, SVB Green Bullet, Binghams Coffee stout, Robinsons Trooper). My Otter and Binghams were both top notch, with the SVB in good form too. Friendly service from the (very young or am I getting old?) barman. Immaculate gents with added Viz cartoons. Impressive rear beer garden with large decked and grassed areas. A lot of money has been thrown at this place and has been very well spent. Really enjoyed my visit and the ‘swift half’ turned into more of a session, which says a lot. Perhaps lacks just a little ‘traditional’ pub factor though that’s nit-picking (how about a Bar Billiards table?). Worth getting a train for from Reading. Rated 9

Split leveled with multi area's there is a bit of a quirkiness about the place, a sarcophagus in one corner some strange clockwork type instruments and some Iron Maiden- esque skulls/face shields along with various dream catchers, the rest of the wall space is mostly taken up with music themed posters and art.The only really naff thing that caught my eye was the large flat screen with a live screensaver of a burning log fire situated above an empty fireplace. There are eight handpumps, just one being vacant on my visit, Otter Bitter, Bombardier,Adnams Ghost Ship,Hogs Back Mistletoe and Swine,Bingham's Macchiato Stout( this was unfortunately a little flat) and The Warmer also a Cider but I couldn't see what it was due to bar congestion. I did note a poster titled Real Ale Monday, all ales £3.00 a pint. All in all a decent little pub.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Rose & Crown

Slightly curious-looking building, which is probably older than it first appears due to the single-storey front extension (which is itself partially obscured by a patio area with lattice fence screening). The interior has been partially opened out to one side, and it retains a separate bar on the other. Large collection of beer bottles and breweriana. Large beer garden to rear, partially decking but mostly grass. Excellent range of real ales from the eight handpumps, dominated by micro-breweries, and my pint of Bingham Doodle Stout (£3.50) was first class. Overall, despite going at a very quiet time in the mid afternoon, I was very impressed.
