This is a McMullen’s pub, and had on AK and Country Bitter. The AK was a decent drop of ale for a 3.7% ABV ale. There was no food – or at least I didn’t see any sign of menus or food mid-afternoon on Wednesday.
The building itself a largish affair with a car park to the side, right on the busy Woodford High Rd. There are two separate bars, but you can walk between them without leaving the building by way of a door at the back near the lavatories. The bar on the left is the smaller of the two and has the look of the original public bar. It is the more basic of the two rooms, but has a nice brick fireplace at the rear. The other room – clearly the saloon bar – is the nicer of the two. It’s carpeted, is clean and comfortable being furnished with red upholstered banquettes, and normal tables and chairs, and with no sign of any sofas or uncomfortable tall tables and stools. This room has some very attractive wood (oak possibly?) panelling on the walls, which looks to be the result of an inter-war fitting, as does the bar counter. I spotted a number of plaques from various cricket clubs on one of the walls, but overall the room seems to some kind of shrine to Sir Winston Churchill, with photographs of him from various times in his life all over the place.
This is a comfortable pub, on which a fair amount of effort has been expended to make it interesting and welcoming. I liked it a lot and would be happy to pay a return visit.

Fairly large 2 bar roadside pub.a basic public bar and a very comfortable lounge bar.sells a selection of McMullens beers.Walls are adorned with pictures of Sir Winston Churchill who had associations with Woodford , being the local MP until his retirement.
